Tiwaz Rune Meditation: Embodying Sacred Justice & the Warrior's Courage

Tiwaz (ᛈ) is the rune of Tyr — of the one-handed god of justice who sacrificed his hand for the safety of the cosmos, of the sacred warrior who fights not for personal gain but for what is right, of the North Star that guides the lost through the darkest night without ever wavering. To meditate with Tiwaz is to embody this energy: to find the sacred warrior within yourself, to align with the cosmic justice that Tyr represents, and to develop the courage to fight for what is right even when the cost is high.

This meditation is particularly powerful for: developing the courage to take a stand for what is right, aligning with cosmic justice before a significant conflict or challenge, healing wounds of injustice — both personal and ancestral, developing the equanimity of the sacred warrior who accepts the outcome of the righteous fight with grace, and connecting with Tyr as a divine ally and guide.

Before You Begin

Light a red or deep blue candle. If you have a piece of iron nearby, hold it in your dominant hand — feel its weight, its density, its quality of unyielding strength. If you have a Tiwaz rune stone or amulet, hold it in your dominant hand. Sit upright with your spine straight — the posture of the warrior who is ready but not tense, alert but not anxious.

Before closing your eyes, ask yourself honestly: what am I fighting for? What is the just cause that this meditation is in service of? If you cannot identify a just cause, this meditation will still be valuable — Tiwaz can help you find the just cause that is yours to fight for, the righteous battle that your life is calling you toward.

Part One: The North Star

Close your eyes. In your mind's eye, find yourself standing in an open field at night — a Norse landscape, dark and vast, the stars brilliant overhead. You are lost; you do not know which direction to go. The darkness is disorienting; the paths are unclear.

Then — you look up and find the North Star. Polaris: fixed, unwavering, the one point in the sky that never moves while all the other stars wheel around it. This is Tiwaz: the fixed point of justice in a world of change and confusion, the guide star that never fails those who look for it.

Feel the North Star's light falling on you — not warm like the sun, but clear and precise, like the light of pure truth. It illuminates the path forward: not all paths, but the right path — the path of justice, the direction that is truly aligned with what is right. Feel yourself orienting toward this light, your body turning to face the direction the North Star is pointing.

Ask Tiwaz: "What is the just path in my current situation? What direction is truly aligned with what is right?" The North Star does not argue or explain; it simply points. Trust the direction that becomes clear.

Part Two: Meeting Tyr

In your mind's eye, become aware of a presence beside you — Tyr, the one-handed god of justice. He is not a god of war in the aggressive sense; he is a god of the sacred order, of the cosmic law that must be maintained for the worlds to function. His missing hand is not a wound but a mark of honor — the visible sign of the sacrifice he made for the greater good.

Feel the quality of Tyr's presence: calm, strong, absolutely certain of what is right. He does not rage or boast; he simply knows. And in his knowing, there is a quality of peace — the peace of someone who has aligned themselves completely with justice and therefore has nothing to fear from the outcome of any conflict.

Ask Tyr: "What sacrifice is being asked of me for the greater good? What am I being called to give up in service of what is right?" Tyr's answer is always honest and always demanding — he does not offer easy paths. But he also offers the courage to walk the difficult path, and the peace that comes from knowing you are walking it with integrity.

Part Three: The Sacred Warrior

With Tyr beside you and the North Star above you, feel the sacred warrior energy activating in your own body. This is not the energy of aggression or domination; it is the energy of the warrior who fights because the fight is necessary, who gives everything because the cause is worth everything, who accepts the outcome with equanimity because they know they have fought with integrity.

Feel this energy in your spine — the uprightness of the warrior who stands for what is right. Feel it in your hands — the readiness to act, to fight, to do what is necessary. Feel it in your heart — the courage that is not the absence of fear but the willingness to act rightly in spite of fear.

Bring to mind the conflict or challenge you are facing. Hold it in your sacred warrior awareness. Ask: "What is the just action here? What does integrity require of me in this situation?" The sacred warrior does not ask "what will win?" but "what is right?" — and then acts accordingly, trusting that justice will ultimately prevail.

Part Four: The Sacrifice

Tiwaz's deepest teaching is the teaching of Tyr's sacrifice: that genuine justice sometimes requires giving up what is most precious for the sake of the greater good. This is not masochism or martyrdom; it is the recognition that some things are worth more than personal comfort or advantage.

Ask yourself honestly: what am I being called to sacrifice in service of what is right? What personal advantage, comfort, or preference must be released for the just cause to be served? Hold this sacrifice in your awareness — feel its cost, feel its necessity, feel the peace that comes from being willing to make it.

You do not need to make the sacrifice in this meditation. Simply be willing. Tiwaz's energy is activated by the willingness to sacrifice for justice — by the alignment of your will with the cosmic order, regardless of personal cost.

Part Five: The Tiwaz Galdr

With the sacred warrior energy fully present and the alignment with justice complete, begin the Galdr. Take a deep, strong breath. On the exhale, chant: "Tiiiii-waz" — strong, clear, upward-reaching. The “Ti” should be firm and decisive; the “waz” should reach upward, like the rune's spear pointing toward the sky. Feel the sound moving through your spine like the North Star's light — clear, precise, unwavering.

Chant nine times. With each repetition, feel the sacred warrior energy growing stronger, the alignment with justice becoming more complete, the courage to fight for what is right becoming more settled and certain. By the ninth chant, you may feel a quality of calm, unwavering strength — the feeling of the sacred warrior who knows their cause is just and is ready to act accordingly.

Part Six: Closing

After the Galdr, sit quietly for a few minutes. Feel the quality of Tiwaz's energy — the calm strength of the sacred warrior, the unwavering clarity of the North Star, the peace of someone who is completely aligned with what is right. Let this feeling settle into your body as a reference point for what genuine integrity feels like.

Thank Tyr. Then take three grounding breaths and open your eyes. Carry the sacred warrior energy with you into whatever conflict or challenge awaits — the calm certainty of someone who knows their cause is just and is willing to fight for it with everything they have.
