The Truth Ritual: What the Full Moon Is Showing You in Tarot
Share
The full moon's most fundamental quality is illumination: it makes visible everything that has been growing in the dark. It reveals what the comfortable, everyday light of ordinary consciousness prefers not to examine too closely. This quality makes the full moon the most powerful time for truth-telling — not the truth you are comfortable with, not the truth you would have chosen to see, but the truth that the full moon's unsparing light is revealing whether you are ready for it or not.
The Truth Ritual is the most challenging of the thirteen full moon tarot rituals and, for many practitioners, the most transformative. It is the ritual designed specifically for the practice of looking directly at what the full moon is showing you — without flinching, without minimizing, without the protective strategies the ego deploys when genuine truth arrives. It requires more courage than the release rituals (which release what you already know you want to let go of) because it asks you to look at what you may not have chosen to see at all.
Why Truth Work Belongs at the Full Moon
The full moon makes truth-telling more accessible for a specific reason: its energy is already oriented toward revelation, and working with that energy rather than against it makes the encounter with difficult truth less effortful and more productive than the same encounter at any other lunar phase. At the new moon, the energy is oriented toward beginning; at the waning moon, toward release; at the full moon, toward the revelation of what is genuinely present. This is the moment when what has been visible only at the edge of awareness arrives at the center — when the thing you have been half-knowing becomes something you can no longer not-know.
The Truth Ritual provides a structured, intentional container for that arrival. Without structure, the full moon's revealing energy can produce a quality of emotional flooding or overwhelm as multiple truths arrive simultaneously without a framework for working with them. With the ritual's structure, the same truths arrive within a container that allows them to be received one at a time, worked with specifically, and integrated rather than simply experienced as destabilizing.
Ritual Setup
Candle: White for the full moon's clarity and the courage of truth; or blue for the throat and the quality of speaking truth clearly. Both together support the dual quality of the Truth Ritual: seeing clearly and being willing to acknowledge what is seen.
Crystals: Labradorite (for seeing what is hidden beneath the surface), lapis lazuli (for truth and the clarity of genuine seeing), obsidian (for the shadow truth that most needs to be faced), and moonstone (for the lunar energy of revelation).
Preparation note: The Truth Ritual calls for a specific quality of internal preparation: before beginning, spend a minimum of five minutes in genuine stillness and ask yourself honestly: "Am I willing to see what the full moon is showing me, even if it is not what I want to see?" Only proceed when the answer is genuinely yes. A Truth Ritual conducted with defensive resistance produces less than the other rituals; it requires a genuine quality of opening that needs to be consciously chosen.
The Truth Tarot Spread
Card 1 — What the full moon is showing you: What is the truth that the full moon's light is revealing right now? This card names what is present in the field of the life that has been arriving at the edge of awareness. It may confirm a half-known truth or reveal something that was more hidden than the practitioner suspected.
Card 2 — What you have been avoiding: What truth have you been actively or unconsciously avoiding? What has been visible enough to register but consistently turned away from, minimized, or deferred? This card names the specific avoidance pattern, which is the most useful information the Truth Ritual can produce.
Card 3 — What the truth asks of you: What does genuine acknowledgment of this truth require from you? Not eventually, not in some ideal future when you feel ready, but right now — what is the first and most accessible thing this truth is asking of you?
Card 4 — What becomes possible when you see clearly: What does genuine truth-telling open? What becomes available — in clarity, in right action, in the quality of your own integrity — when you stop managing or avoiding this truth and instead look at it directly?
Card 5 — The support available: What support is available to you as you work with this truth? Internal capacities, external resources, the specific quality of spiritual or relational support that this particular truth-telling requires — this card names what is genuinely available to help you face what needs to be faced.
The Three-Step Ritual Flow
Step 1: The Undefended Statement. Write the truth the reading has revealed in the most undefended, unqualified form available to you: not "I have been somewhat concerned about" but "The truth is." The undefended statement, written without the softening that protective language provides, is the ritual's central act.
Step 2: The Acknowledgment of What This Costs. Write honestly what it costs you to acknowledge this truth: the comfort of not-knowing that it ends, the specific difficulty of what acknowledging it requires. The Truth Ritual does not pretend that truth-telling is costless; it honors the cost as part of the practice.
Step 3: The First True Step. Based on Card 3, identify and commit to the single first true step that this truth requires — the smallest, most accessible step that is genuinely aligned with what you have just acknowledged, rather than what you have been managing or avoiding. This step needs to be taken within twenty-four hours of the ritual.
