Upper World, Middle World, Lower World: The Three Realms

BY NICOLE LAU

In shamanic cosmology, reality is not flat. It's not just this physical world we see and touch. Reality is layered, multi-dimensional, with at least three distinct realms that shamans navigate:

The Upper Worldβ€”realm of light, teachers, and celestial wisdom.
The Middle Worldβ€”the spirit aspect of our physical reality.
The Lower Worldβ€”realm of earth, power animals, and primal forces.

Each realm has its own landscape, inhabitants, energies, and purposes. Learning to journey to all three is essential to shamanic practice.

This is your map to the three worlds.

The World Tree: Axis Mundi

The three worlds are connected by the World Tree (axis mundi)β€”the cosmic axis that runs through the center of all reality:

  • Roots: Reach into the Lower World
  • Trunk: Stands in the Middle World
  • Branches: Extend into the Upper World

This sacred tree appears in cultures worldwide:

  • Yggdrasil (Norse): The ash tree connecting nine worlds
  • Tree of Life (Qabalah): The structure of divine emanation
  • Bodhi Tree (Buddhism): Where Buddha achieved enlightenment
  • Sacred trees in indigenous traditions worldwide

The shaman climbs or descends this tree to travel between worlds.

The Lower World

🌍 What Is the Lower World?

The Lower World is NOT hell, the underworld of punishment, or a place of evil. It is:

  • The realm of earth and nature
  • The domain of power animals
  • The place of primal, instinctual wisdom
  • The source of vitality and life force
  • The realm of ancestors and ancient knowledge

It's called "lower" because you journey DOWN to reach it (through caves, roots, water, earth).

Landscape of the Lower World

The Lower World often appears as pristine, vibrant nature:

  • Lush forests with ancient trees
  • Jungles teeming with life
  • Caves and underground rivers
  • Deserts, plains, or tundra
  • Oceans and underwater realms
  • Prehistoric or primordial landscapes

The colors are often MORE vivid than ordinary realityβ€”hyper-real, alive, pulsing with energy.

Inhabitants of the Lower World

  • Power animals: Your primary allies and protectors
  • Nature spirits: Spirits of plants, stones, elements
  • Ancestors: Ancient ones, lineage holders
  • Earth guardians: Protectors of the land
  • Primal forces: Raw, elemental energies

When to Journey to the Lower World

Go to the Lower World when you need:

  • To meet your power animal
  • Grounding and stability
  • Physical healing or vitality
  • Instinctual wisdom (gut knowing)
  • Connection to earth and nature
  • Primal power and strength
  • Ancestral wisdom
  • Help with survival issues (money, health, safety)

How to Journey to the Lower World

  1. Find a downward portal: Cave, hollow tree, hole in the ground, body of water, roots
  2. Enter and descend: Fall, climb down, swim down, or be pulled down
  3. Move through a tunnel: Often dark, sometimes with lights or colors
  4. Emerge into the landscape: You'll know when you've arrivedβ€”it feels different
  5. Look for your power animal or guide

The Energy of the Lower World

Feeling: Grounded, earthy, primal, instinctual, wild
Quality: Yin, receptive, dark (in a fertile way), magnetic
Element: Earth and Water
Body: Belly, root chakra, physical body
Time: Ancient, timeless, cyclical

The Upper World

☁️ What Is the Upper World?

The Upper World is:

  • The realm of light and celestial beings
  • The domain of teachers and guides
  • The place of mental and spiritual wisdom
  • The source of inspiration and vision
  • The realm of higher consciousness

It's called "upper" because you journey UP to reach it (climbing, flying, ascending).

Landscape of the Upper World

The Upper World often appears as ethereal, luminous, and less "solid" than the Lower World:

  • Clouds and sky realms
  • Crystalline cities or temples
  • Gardens of light
  • Geometric structures (sacred geometry made manifest)
  • Libraries or halls of learning
  • Celestial landscapes (stars, planets, cosmic vistas)
  • Abstract or symbolic spaces

The Upper World can feel more "mental" or "conceptual" than the earthy Lower World.

Inhabitants of the Upper World

  • Spirit teachers: Wise elders, ascended masters, enlightened beings
  • Angels or celestial beings
  • Deities or archetypal forces
  • Ancestors (recent or elevated)
  • Guides in human or humanoid form
  • Beings of light

When to Journey to the Upper World

Go to the Upper World when you need:

  • Spiritual guidance and wisdom
  • Big-picture perspective
  • Mental clarity and insight
  • Connection to higher consciousness
  • Teaching on spiritual or philosophical matters
  • Inspiration and vision
  • Help with life purpose or direction
  • Healing of mental or spiritual issues

How to Journey to the Upper World

  1. Find an upward portal: Mountain, ladder, tree, beam of light, smoke, bird
  2. Ascend: Climb, fly, be lifted, or float upward
  3. Move through layers: Often passing through clouds or membranes
  4. Emerge into the landscape: It may feel lighter, brighter, more spacious
  5. Look for your teacher or guide

The Energy of the Upper World

Feeling: Light, expansive, clear, elevated, transcendent
Quality: Yang, active, bright, radiant
Element: Air and Fire
Body: Head, crown chakra, energy body
Time: Eternal, beyond time, future-oriented

The Middle World

🌲 What Is the Middle World?

The Middle World is:

  • The spirit aspect of physical reality
  • The realm we live in, but seen shamanically
  • The domain of nature spirits and land spirits
  • The place where ordinary and non-ordinary reality overlap
  • The realm of the here and now

It's the "middle" because it's between Upper and Lowerβ€”it's THIS world, but experienced in non-ordinary reality.

Landscape of the Middle World

The Middle World looks like ordinary reality, but:

  • More alive and animated
  • Spirits are visible
  • You can travel instantly (to other locations, other times)
  • You can see the spiritual layer of physical places
  • You can communicate with everything (trees, rocks, rivers, buildings)

Inhabitants of the Middle World

  • Nature spirits: Spirits of trees, plants, stones, rivers, mountains
  • Land spirits: Guardians of specific places
  • Elementals: Gnomes, sylphs, salamanders, undines
  • Ghosts or earthbound spirits (sometimes)
  • Spirits of human-made things (cities, buildings, objects)
  • The spirits of living people (their energy bodies)

When to Journey to the Middle World

Go to the Middle World when you need:

  • To find lost objects
  • To communicate with nature spirits
  • To check on someone's energy (with permission)
  • To visit a place remotely
  • To understand the spiritual aspect of a physical situation
  • To work with land spirits or place-based magic
  • To see the past or possible futures of a location

How to Journey to the Middle World

  1. Enter through a horizontal portal: Mist, doorway, familiar landscape
  2. Or simply shift perception: See the ordinary world with shamanic eyes
  3. Travel to a specific location (your backyard, a forest, a city, anywhere)
  4. Look for spirits of that place
  5. Communicate and interact

The Energy of the Middle World

Feeling: Familiar yet magical, present, immediate
Quality: Balanced yin-yang, dynamic
Element: All four elements in balance
Body: Heart, solar plexus, whole body
Time: Present moment, linear time

⚠️ Caution with the Middle World

The Middle World can be trickier than Upper or Lower:

  • Not all spirits here are helpful (some are confused, stuck, or mischievous)
  • You can encounter human suffering (ghosts, trauma imprints)
  • It's easier to get lost or confused (it looks like ordinary reality)
  • Ethical issues arise (seeing others' energy without permission)

Many teachers recommend beginners focus on Upper and Lower Worlds first.

Journeying to All Three Worlds

Building Relationships

Don't just visit once. Build ongoing relationships:

  • Return to the same places
  • Deepen connections with specific allies
  • Learn the geography of each realm
  • Discover your personal sacred sites in each world

Balancing the Worlds

A complete shamanic practice includes all three:

  • Lower World: Keeps you grounded, vital, connected to earth
  • Upper World: Keeps you inspired, clear, connected to spirit
  • Middle World: Keeps you present, engaged, connected to here and now

Too much Upper World = ungrounded, spacey, disconnected from body
Too much Lower World = stuck in survival, unable to see bigger picture
Too much Middle World = caught in drama, unable to access deeper wisdom

The Shamanic Cosmos

Some traditions recognize more than three worlds:

  • Norse: Nine worlds connected by Yggdrasil
  • Some indigenous traditions: Seven or more layers in each direction
  • Core shamanism: Focuses on the basic three

Start with three. As your practice deepens, you may discover more.

Final Thoughts

The three worlds are not separate from each otherβ€”they're interconnected, interpenetrating, all part of one reality. The World Tree holds them together. The shaman moves between them.

You are the axis. You are the bridge. You stand in the Middle World with roots reaching down and branches reaching up.

The three worlds are waiting. Which will you visit first?

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
