The Value Source Spread: A Shadow Work Reading for What You're Actually Tethered To
Share
The Value Source Spread is the first of the seven original shadow work spreads in the Internal Locus Practice Guide and the one that serves as the foundation for all the deeper work that follows. Its purpose is precise: to surface, through the tarot's diagnostic capacity, the specific external sources that are currently serving as the structural anchors of your felt sense of worth — not the sources you consciously believe you are relying on, but the sources your behavior, your emotional responses, and your deepest anxieties are actually revealing.
The gap between what we consciously believe about our worth structure and what our actual responses reveal is almost always larger than expected. Intellectually sophisticated practitioners frequently believe they have achieved greater internal locus than their emotional responses actually indicate. The Value Source Spread is designed to close that gap by surfacing the structural reality rather than the idealized self-concept.
The Five Positions
Position 1: The Primary Source — What am I most fundamentally tethered to?
This card identifies the external source that is currently providing the primary structural support for your felt sense of worth. Read it not for what you wish to be true but for what the card, placed in this position without the filtering of your self-concept, is actually revealing. A court card here often indicates a specific person or a category of person whose approval or love is structurally central. A Major Arcana card often indicates a life principle or archetype (achievement, belonging, authority) that is serving as the primary source. A Minor Arcana card specifies the domain: Wands (creative recognition), Cups (relational warmth and approval), Swords (intellectual recognition and being seen as competent), Pentacles (material achievement and financial security).
Position 2: The Secondary Source — What am I tethered to when the primary source is unavailable?
This card identifies the backup source — what you reach for when your primary external source is withdrawn or unavailable. Most people with external locus have at least two sources, and the secondary source often operates so automatically that it feels like a healthy coping response rather than a secondary tether. It is worth examining with the same honesty as the primary: is this genuinely self-sustaining, or is it another form of external dependence that activates when the first source fails?
Position 3: The Hidden Source — What am I tethered to that I have not fully acknowledged?
This is the most important position in the spread and the one where the tarot's ability to surface what the conscious mind has not yet articulated is most valuable. The hidden source is the external tether that is operating most invisibly — often because it is the source that feels most shameful to acknowledge, or the source that the practitioner's self-concept most strongly resists recognizing as a tether. Many practitioners who believe they have released approval-seeking find it operating covertly as something they have renamed ("I just care about doing good work," which is actually "I need my work to be recognized as good in order to feel worthy"). The third position is where these covert operations surface.
Position 4: What the tethering is costing me
This card maps the specific cost of the current worth structure — what you are giving up, suppressing, or losing access to in order to maintain the external sources identified in positions 1, 2, and 3. This position is often the most motivationally potent in the spread, because the cost of external locus is frequently more immediate and concrete than the benefit of internal locus feels abstract. What specific dimension of your own life is being compressed, denied, or distorted by the current architecture of your worth?
Position 5: The first step toward internal locus
This card does not prescribe a complete path; it identifies the specific first action, practice, or shift that is most immediately available to begin the movement from the current worth structure toward internal sourcing. Read this card practically: not as an inspirational image but as a specific directive. If Strength appears here, the directive is to begin the practice of gentle relationship with the internal experience that currently feels threatening. If The Hermit appears, the directive is deliberate withdrawal from the external sources to spend time with the inner life. If a Pentacles card appears, the directive may be to take a specific concrete action that is aligned with your own values rather than with external recognition.
How to Use the Reading
The Value Source Spread is designed to be returned to multiple times across the 30-day practice — not because the reading changes dramatically, but because your capacity to read it honestly deepens over time. A reading performed at the beginning of the practice and the same reading performed at the end of Phase 2 (Dissolution) will be read by different levels of clarity, and the differences in what you see will themselves be diagnostic information about how the work is progressing.
The most important instruction remains constant across all uses: read what is there, not what you wish were there. The spread's value is entirely in its accuracy. A flattering inaccurate reading is a pleasant experience with no practical utility. A precise uncomfortable reading is the actual beginning of the work.
