Variable Identification in Divination: Mapping the Decision Space

BY NICOLE LAU

The first and most crucial step in Dynamic Divination Modeling Theory (DDMT) is variable identificationβ€”the systematic process of mapping all the forces, factors, and influences active in your situation. Traditional divination asks one question and gives one answer. Dynamic divination recognizes that every situation is a complex system with multiple variables interacting simultaneously.

Think of it like this: when you ask "Should I take this job?" you're not asking about one thing. You're asking about your skills, your confidence, your financial needs, the company culture, the market conditions, your family's support, the timing of planetary transits, and dozens of other variablesβ€”all influencing each other in a dynamic web of cause and effect.

This article teaches you how to identify, categorize, and map these variables using divination as your analytical tool.

The Four Dimensions of Variables

In DDMT, we organize variables into four primary dimensions, each corresponding to different divination methods:

1. Internal Variables (Tarot)

These are the forces within youβ€”your psychology, energy, and inner state:

  • Beliefs: What do you believe about yourself, the situation, and what's possible? (The Magician = belief in your power, Five of Cups = belief in loss)
  • Emotions: What are you feeling? Fear, excitement, grief, hope? (Cups suit reveals emotional landscape)
  • Skills & Abilities: What competencies do you bring? (Eight of Pentacles = mastery, Page of Swords = learning)
  • Energy & Vitality: What's your current energy level? Burnout or abundance? (The Sun = high energy, Four of Swords = depletion)
  • Intentions & Desires: What do you truly want? (Wands suit reveals will and desire)
  • Shadow & Resistance: What unconscious patterns are sabotaging you? (The Devil = addiction/attachment, The Moon = illusion/fear)

Divination Method: Use tarot to map internal variables. Each card reveals a specific psychological or energetic factor.

2. External Variables (Astrology)

These are the forces outside youβ€”the environment, other people, and circumstances:

  • Market Conditions: What's happening in your industry/field? (Jupiter transits = expansion, Saturn transits = contraction)
  • Other People's Actions: What are key players doing? (Venus aspects = relationship dynamics, Mars aspects = conflict/competition)
  • Resources Available: What money, time, support exists? (2nd house transits = financial resources, 11th house = community support)
  • Timing & Cycles: Is this the right moment? (Planetary returns, eclipses, retrogrades show timing)
  • Opportunities & Obstacles: What doors are opening/closing? (Jupiter = opportunities, Saturn = obstacles)
  • Luck & Synchronicity: What unexpected factors might appear? (Uranus transits = surprises, Neptune = synchronicity)

Divination Method: Use astrology (transits, progressions, solar returns) to map external variables and timing.

3. Relational Variables (Runes)

These are the forces between you and othersβ€”power dynamics, communication, and connection:

  • Power Dynamics: Who has power? How is it distributed? (Tiwaz = leadership/authority, Thurisaz = force/conflict)
  • Communication Quality: How well are you being heard/understood? (Ansuz = clear communication, Isa = blocked communication)
  • Trust & Alignment: Do you trust each other? Are you aligned? (Gebo = partnership/gift, Hagalaz = disruption/breakdown)
  • Boundaries & Sovereignty: Are boundaries healthy? (Algiz = protection/boundaries, Berkano = nurturing/containment)
  • Reciprocity & Exchange: Is the give-and-take balanced? (Fehu = wealth/exchange, Othala = inheritance/legacy)

Divination Method: Use runes to map relational variables. Each rune reveals a specific dynamic between you and others.

4. Temporal Variables (I Ching)

These are the forces of timeβ€”momentum, cycles, delays, and transformation:

  • Current Momentum: What direction is the energy moving? (Hexagram 1 Qian = initiating force, Hexagram 2 Kun = receptive yielding)
  • Cycles & Seasons: Where are you in the natural cycle? (Hexagram 24 Return = winter turning to spring, Hexagram 44 Coming to Meet = autumn)
  • Delays & Waiting: How long until results appear? (Hexagram 5 Waiting = necessary delay, Hexagram 3 Difficulty at Beginning = slow start)
  • Transformation Pace: How fast is change happening? (Changing lines show speed of transformation)
  • Windows of Opportunity: When should you act? (Hexagram 25 Innocence = spontaneous action, Hexagram 52 Keeping Still = wait)

Divination Method: Use I Ching to map temporal variables. Hexagrams and changing lines reveal timing and transformation dynamics.

The Variable Identification Process

Here's the step-by-step method for mapping your decision space:

Step 1: Define Your Question Clearly

Not "What will happen?" but "What variables are active in [specific situation]?"

Example: Instead of "Will I get the promotion?" ask "What internal, external, relational, and temporal variables are influencing my promotion opportunity?"

Step 2: Map Internal Variables (Tarot)

Draw 4-6 tarot cards, asking: "What internal variables (beliefs, emotions, skills, energy, desires, shadows) are active in this situation?"

Example spread:
Card 1: Current belief system (The Magician = "I have the power")
Card 2: Dominant emotion (Three of Swords = grief/disappointment from past)
Card 3: Key skill/ability (King of Pentacles = leadership/management mastery)
Card 4: Energy level (Four of Swords = depleted, need rest)
Card 5: True desire (Ace of Wands = want creative challenge)
Card 6: Shadow/resistance (The Devil = workaholic pattern, fear of rest)

Step 3: Map External Variables (Astrology)

Check current transits to your natal chart, asking: "What external variables (market, others' actions, resources, timing, opportunities) are active?"

Example analysis:
Jupiter transiting 10th house = career expansion opportunity available
Saturn square natal Sun = authority figures testing you
Venus trine natal Mercury = good communication with decision-makers
Mars in 2nd house = financial pressure/motivation
Upcoming eclipse in 6th house = work transformation coming

Step 4: Map Relational Variables (Runes)

Draw 3-5 runes, asking: "What relational variables (power, communication, trust, boundaries, reciprocity) are active between me and key people?"

Example cast:
Rune 1: Power dynamic with boss (Tiwaz = they hold authority, but respect your competence)
Rune 2: Communication quality (Ansuz = clear, open dialogue possible)
Rune 3: Trust level (Gebo = mutual gift/exchange, trust exists)
Rune 4: Boundary health (Algiz = need to protect your energy/time)
Rune 5: Reciprocity (Fehu reversed = currently giving more than receiving)

Step 5: Map Temporal Variables (I Ching)

Cast I Ching hexagram, asking: "What temporal variables (momentum, cycles, delays, transformation pace, timing) are active?"

Example reading:
Hexagram 3 (Difficulty at Beginning) changing to Hexagram 8 (Holding Together)
Interpretation: Initial difficulty and slow start (Hex 3), but momentum building toward unity and support (Hex 8). Changing lines show 3-6 month transformation period. Not immediate, but progressing.

Step 6: Create Your Variable Map

Organize all identified variables into a visual map or list:

INTERNAL:
βœ“ Belief: I have power (Magician)
βœ— Emotion: Grief from past (3 of Swords)
βœ“ Skill: Leadership mastery (King of Pentacles)
βœ— Energy: Depleted (4 of Swords)
βœ“ Desire: Creative challenge (Ace of Wands)
βœ— Shadow: Workaholic pattern (Devil)

EXTERNAL:
βœ“ Opportunity: Career expansion (Jupiter 10th)
βœ— Challenge: Authority testing (Saturn square Sun)
βœ“ Support: Good communication (Venus trine Mercury)
βœ— Pressure: Financial motivation (Mars 2nd)
⚠ Timing: Transformation coming (Eclipse 6th)

RELATIONAL:
βœ“ Power: Respected competence (Tiwaz)
βœ“ Communication: Open dialogue (Ansuz)
βœ“ Trust: Mutual exchange (Gebo)
βœ— Boundaries: Need protection (Algiz)
βœ— Reciprocity: Giving > receiving (Fehu reversed)

TEMPORAL:
⚠ Momentum: Slow start (Hex 3)
βœ“ Direction: Moving toward unity (Hex 8)
⚠ Timeline: 3-6 months (changing lines)
βœ“ Action: Persist through difficulty

Variable Classification System

Once identified, classify each variable:

Supportive (βœ“): Variables working in your favor
Challenging (βœ—): Variables creating obstacles
Neutral (⚠): Variables that could go either way
Unknown (?): Variables you can't assess yet

This classification helps you see: Which variables to leverage (supportive), which to address (challenging), which to monitor (neutral), and which need more information (unknown).

Common Mistakes in Variable Identification

Mistake 1: Identifying Too Few Variables
Seeing only 2-3 variables when 10-15 are active. This oversimplifies the system and misses crucial factors.

Mistake 2: Ignoring One Dimension
Focusing only on internal (psychology) or external (circumstances) while ignoring relational or temporal. All four dimensions matter.

Mistake 3: Not Using Multiple Divination Systems
Relying only on tarot when astrology would reveal timing, or only I Ching when runes would show relational dynamics. Use the right tool for each dimension.

Mistake 4: Treating Variables as Static
Identifying variables once and assuming they stay the same. Variables are dynamicβ€”they change as the system evolves. Re-map regularly.

Advanced Technique: Variable Weighting

Not all variables have equal influence. Some are high-leverage (changing them shifts the whole system), others are low-leverage (changing them has minimal impact).

To identify high-leverage variables, ask: If this variable changed, how much would the outcome change? If the answer is "dramatically," it's high-leverage. If "slightly," it's low-leverage.

Example: In the promotion scenario above, "Leadership mastery" (King of Pentacles) is high-leverageβ€”it directly affects the decision. "Grief from past" (3 of Swords) is lower-leverageβ€”it affects your mood but not the external decision as much.

Focus your energy on high-leverage variables.

Why Variable Identification Changes Everything

Traditional divination: "Will I get the promotion?" β†’ One card β†’ Yes/No β†’ Vague.

Dynamic divination: "What variables influence my promotion?" β†’ 20+ variables mapped across four dimensions β†’ Clear picture of what's supporting you, what's challenging you, what you can change, and what you must accept.

This is the foundation of DDMT. Once you've mapped the variables, you can model their interactions (next article), analyze scenarios, find leverage points, and generate actionable guidance.

Variable identification transforms divination from fortune-telling into systems analysis. You're not asking the universe to tell you your fate. You're mapping the decision space so you can navigate it consciously.

The old way: One question, one card, one answer. The new way: Map the variables, see the system, understand the forces. From simplistic to sophisticated. From passive to analytical. From fate to agency. This is variable identification. This is how you map the decision space.

As you map your decision space through divination, remember that each symbol and variable you identify is a thread in the fabric of your consciousness, waiting to be woven into intention. More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
