Vata, Pitta, Kapha: Discovering Your Ayurvedic Constitution

BY NICOLE LAU

"Know thyself."

This ancient wisdom is at the heart of Ayurveda. To live in balance, you must first understand your unique constitutionβ€”your prakriti.

Your prakriti is your natural state, determined at conception by the unique combination of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) you were born with.

Understanding your prakriti is like having a user manual for your body and mind. It tells you:

  • Your natural tendencies and strengths
  • What keeps you in balance
  • What throws you out of balance
  • How to eat, exercise, and live for optimal health
  • Your susceptibility to certain diseases

Most people are not purely one dosha. You're likely a combinationβ€”Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha, or Vata-Kaphaβ€”with one or two doshas dominant.

Let's discover your Ayurvedic constitution.

Prakriti vs Vikriti

Before we begin, understand two key concepts:

Prakriti (Your Natural Constitution)

Prakriti is your natural stateβ€”the unique combination of doshas you were born with. This doesn't change throughout your life.

Think of it as your blueprintβ€”your default settings, your natural balance point.

Vikriti (Your Current State)

Vikriti is your current stateβ€”how your doshas are balanced (or imbalanced) right now.

Vikriti changes based on:

  • Season
  • Diet
  • Lifestyle
  • Stress
  • Age
  • Environment

The Goal

The goal of Ayurveda is to bring your vikriti (current state) back into alignment with your prakriti (natural state).

When vikriti = prakriti, you're in balance and healthy.

Scoring Your Results

Count how many Vata, Pitta, and Kapha answers you chose.

If One Dosha Is Dominant (60% or more):

You're primarily that dosha:

  • Vata constitution
  • Pitta constitution
  • Kapha constitution

If Two Doshas Are Close (within 10%):

You're a dual-doshic type:

  • Vata-Pitta (or Pitta-Vata)
  • Pitta-Kapha (or Kapha-Pitta)
  • Vata-Kapha (or Kapha-Vata)

The first dosha listed is usually more dominant.

If All Three Are Equal (rare):

You're tri-doshicβ€”all three doshas in equal balance. This is rare and considered very balanced, but also means you can be thrown off by any of the three doshas.

Understanding Dual-Doshic Types

Most people are dual-doshic. Here's what that means:

Vata-Pitta

Characteristics:

  • Thin to medium build
  • Quick, sharp mind
  • Creative and intelligent
  • Can be anxious and irritable
  • Variable appetite but strong when hungry

Imbalances: Anxiety, anger, insomnia, digestive issues

Balance: Need grounding (Vata) and cooling (Pitta)

Pitta-Kapha

Characteristics:

  • Medium to large build
  • Strong, athletic
  • Intelligent and steady
  • Can be intense and stubborn
  • Strong appetite and digestion

Imbalances: Inflammation, weight gain, anger, attachment

Balance: Need cooling (Pitta) and lightness (Kapha)

Vata-Kapha

Characteristics:

  • Variable build (can be thin or heavy)
  • Creative and calm
  • Can be anxious and lethargic
  • Irregular appetite
  • Opposite qualities (Vata is light, Kapha is heavy)

Imbalances: Anxiety, depression, weight fluctuations, congestion

Balance: Need warmth and regularity

Living According to Your Constitution

Once you know your prakriti, you can make choices that keep you in balance.

For Vata Constitution

To Stay Balanced:

  • Maintain regular routine (meals, sleep, exercise)
  • Stay warm and avoid cold, dry environments
  • Eat warm, cooked, grounding foods
  • Favor sweet, sour, salty tastes
  • Practice gentle, grounding yoga
  • Get adequate rest and avoid overstimulation
  • Oil massage (abhyanga) regularly

Avoid: Irregular routine, cold/raw foods, excessive travel, overstimulation, too much mental activity

For Pitta Constitution

To Stay Balanced:

  • Stay cool, avoid excessive heat
  • Eat cooling, fresh foods
  • Favor sweet, bitter, astringent tastes
  • Practice cooling, calming yoga
  • Avoid overwork and excessive competition
  • Spend time in nature, near water
  • Practice patience and compassion

Avoid: Excessive heat, spicy/oily foods, overwork, competitive environments, anger and criticism

For Kapha Constitution

To Stay Balanced:

  • Stay active, exercise regularly
  • Eat light, warm, spicy foods
  • Favor pungent, bitter, astringent tastes
  • Practice vigorous, energizing yoga
  • Avoid oversleeping
  • Seek variety and stimulation
  • Dry brushing before shower

Avoid: Sedentary lifestyle, heavy/oily foods, oversleeping, excessive routine, attachment

Recognizing Imbalance

Even if you know your prakriti, you can still go out of balance. Here's how to recognize it:

Vata Imbalance Signs:

  • Anxiety, worry, fear
  • Insomnia or restless sleep
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin, hair, lips
  • Joint pain or cracking
  • Scattered mind, can't focus
  • Weight loss

Pitta Imbalance Signs:

  • Anger, irritability, impatience
  • Skin rashes, acne, inflammation
  • Heartburn, acid reflux
  • Excessive heat in body
  • Loose stools or diarrhea
  • Overly critical or judgmental
  • Bloodshot eyes

Kapha Imbalance Signs:

  • Weight gain
  • Congestion, mucus
  • Lethargy, depression
  • Oversleeping
  • Slow digestion
  • Resistance to change
  • Attachment, greed

Seasonal Considerations

Doshas are also affected by seasons:

Vata Season (Fall/Early Winter): Cold, dry, windy. Vata increases. Everyone needs more grounding.

Kapha Season (Late Winter/Spring): Cold, wet, heavy. Kapha increases. Everyone needs more lightness and activity.

Pitta Season (Summer): Hot, intense. Pitta increases. Everyone needs more cooling.

Age and Doshas

Doshas also dominate different life stages:

Kapha Age (Birth to ~16): Growth, building, learning. Kapha dominant.

Pitta Age (~16 to ~50): Transformation, achievement, metabolism. Pitta dominant.

Vata Age (50+): Movement, change, degeneration. Vata dominant.

Working with an Ayurvedic Practitioner

While self-assessment is helpful, consider consulting a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for:

  • Accurate prakriti assessment
  • Pulse diagnosis (nadi pariksha)
  • Personalized diet and lifestyle recommendations
  • Herbal formulations
  • Panchakarma (detox) if needed

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
