Venus Invocation: Calling in the Goddess of Love for Your Ritual Practice
Share
Venus is the oldest name we have for love.
Before the Roman Venus, there was the Greek Aphrodite. Before Aphrodite, there was the Sumerian Inanna, whose descent to the underworld and triumphant return is one of the oldest stories of love, loss, and reclamation in human literature. The goddess of love — by whatever name, in whatever tradition — represents something that human beings have always understood as larger than any individual experience of loving or being loved.
To invoke Venus is to consciously align yourself with that larger principle — with the archetypal energy of love, beauty, pleasure, and the heart fully opened.
Who Venus Is
Venus in the Western astrological and spiritual tradition is the ruling principle of love, beauty, harmony, pleasure, and the arts. She governs what we value — not just who we love, but what we find beautiful, what brings us genuine pleasure, what we consider worth having.
In the birth chart, Venus's placement describes both how you love and what you are attracted to — the signature of your particular relationship with love. In ritual, working with Venus means working with the full spectrum of what she governs: not just the romantic and the passionate, but also the beautiful, the pleasurable, the harmonious, and the valuable.
Venus is associated with: Friday (her sacred day of the week), the colors pink and green, roses, copper, rose quartz, malachite, emerald, sweet fragrances (rose, vanilla, jasmine, sandalwood), and the hours of dawn and dusk when the planet Venus herself is most often visible in the sky.
What Invocation Means
Invocation is the act of consciously calling a quality, energy, or divine principle into your awareness and your space. It is not worship in the sense of submission or supplication. It is alignment — the deliberate act of opening yourself to a specific quality of energy and inviting it to be present and operative in your practice.
You do not need to be a devotee of Venus to invoke her. You need only the sincere intention to open to what she represents: love in its fullness, beauty in its depth, the heart's capacity to give and receive with genuine generosity.
The Venus Invocation Ritual
What you need:
- A pink or green candle (Venus's colors)
- Rose water or rose oil
- Fresh roses or rose petals if available
- Optional: rose quartz, malachite, or copper
- Optional: a mirror (Venus is associated with the mirror as a symbol of self-reflection and beauty)
Best timing: Friday, at dawn or dusk. New or full moon amplifies the energy.
The practice:
- Create a beautiful space. Venus is the goddess of beauty; the aesthetics of your ritual space matter. Fresh flowers, candlelight, something that pleases your senses.
- Anoint the candle with rose oil, working upward (drawing in). Light it.
- Stand or sit before the candle. Take several slow breaths.
- Speak the invocation aloud. You can use traditional language or your own words — what matters is the sincerity of the call. Something like: "Venus, goddess of love and beauty, I call to you. Open my heart. Align me with love in its fullness. Help me give and receive with generosity and grace. Be present in this practice and in my life."
- Sit quietly and simply be present with whatever arises. Notice any shift in the quality of your awareness, your emotional state, or the feeling in your chest.
- Set your love intention for this Venus session: what are you asking her help with? Be specific.
- Close with gratitude: "Thank you, Venus, for your presence and your guidance. I receive your gift."
- Let the candle burn for as long as feels right.
Working with Venus Regularly
A Venus practice built into your regular ritual calendar — even a brief Friday acknowledgment of her energy and what you are cultivating in the domain of love — creates a sustained relationship with the archetypal principle of love that deepens over time. The goddess of love, like love itself, responds to consistent devotion.
