BY NICOLE LAU
Divination during Vesak is about seeking guidance on the path to awakening, understanding obstacles to enlightenment, and receiving wisdom from the Buddha and bodhisattvas. This isn't fortune-telling; it's sacred inquiry into the nature of your spiritual journey, the karma you're working with, and the dharma teachings you most need. As the Vesak full moon illuminates the path, divination invites us to see clearly where we are, where we're going, and what practices will support our awakening.
Tarot and the Buddhist Path
Several tarot cards embody the energy of Vesak and the Buddhist path:
- The Hermit (IX): The seeker of wisdom, meditation, enlightenment. The Hermit is the Buddha under the Bodhi tree.
- Temperance (XIV): The Middle Way, balance, moderation. Temperance represents the Buddha's teaching to avoid extremes.
- The Star (XVII): Hope, enlightenment, the guiding light of dharma. The Star is the Buddha's wisdom illuminating the path.
- The World (XXI): Completion, enlightenment, nirvana. The World is the attainment of awakening.
- The Hanged Man (XII): Surrender, letting go, seeing from a new perspective. The Hanged Man represents the shift in consciousness that leads to awakening.
- Judgment (XX): Awakening, rebirth, liberation. Judgment is the moment of enlightenment.

Buddhist Oracle Divination
The Bodhi Leaf Oracle
Use Bodhi leaves (or any sacred leaves) for divination:
- Gather several Bodhi leaves (or leaves from a sacred tree).
- Write a question on each leaf (or assign each leaf a meaning).
- Place them in a bowl and mix them.
- Close your eyes and draw one leaf.
- The leaf you draw reveals the answer or the teaching you need.
Alternative: Observe how leaves fall from a tree. The pattern reveals guidance:
- Falling straight down: Direct path, clarity
- Spiraling: Transformation, cycles
- Blown away: Let go, release
- Landing near you: The teaching is close, pay attention
The Lotus Petal Oracle
Use lotus petals for yes/no or guidance:
- Gather lotus petals (or rose petals as substitute).
- Ask your question.
- Scatter the petals and observe the pattern:
- Circle: Wholeness, completion, the answer is within
- Line: Clear path, direct action needed
- Scattered: Let go, don't force, allow things to unfold
- Cluster: Gather resources, seek support
- Count the petals: Odd number = yes/active, Even number = no/receptive
The Dharma Wheel Oracle
Create an oracle based on the Eightfold Path:
Draw or create eight cards, each representing one aspect of the path. Shuffle and draw one for daily guidance on which aspect to focus on.
I Ching and Buddhist Practice
The I Ching can be used for Buddhist divination:
Buddhist I Ching Reading
- Formulate your question in terms of dharma practice.
- Cast the hexagram using coins or yarrow stalks.
- Read the hexagram through a Buddhist lens:
- How does this hexagram relate to the Middle Way?
- What does it teach about impermanence?
- How can this guidance support my practice?
Meditation as Divination
In Buddhism, meditation itself is a form of divinationβseeing clearly into the nature of reality:
Insight Meditation for Guidance
- Sit in meditation with your question.
- Don't seek an answerβsimply be present with the question.
- Observe what arises: thoughts, feelings, sensations, images.
- Notice patterns: What keeps returning? What feels true?
- Trust the process: The answer may come during meditation or later, when you're not trying.
- Journal any insights immediately after meditation.
Dream Divination on Vesak
The Vesak full moon is auspicious for prophetic dreams:
The Practice
- Before sleep on Vesak, sit in meditation.
- Ask the Buddha (or your own Buddha-nature) to send guidance through dreams.
- Say: "May the wisdom of the Buddha illuminate my dreams. May I receive the teaching I need."
- Sleep with awareness, setting the intention to remember your dreams.
- Upon waking, immediately journal your dreams.
- Look for symbols:
- Lotus: Awakening, purity, potential
- Buddha: Direct teaching, guidance, blessing
- Light: Wisdom, clarity, enlightenment
- Water: Emotions, purification, flow
- Mountains: Stability, meditation, the path
Sutra Divination (Bibliomancy)
Use Buddhist sutras for guidance:
- Hold a sutra book (Dhammapada, Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra, etc.).
- Ask your question while holding the book.
- Open the book randomly and point to a passage.
- Read the passage as the Buddha's teaching for you right now.
- Contemplate: How does this teaching apply to your question?
Working with Tarot Cards for Vesak
If you're using tarot during Vesak, focus on these cards as "Enlightenment allies":
- The Hermit: For wisdom, meditation, and solitary practice
- Temperance: For balance, the Middle Way, and moderation
- The Star: For hope, guidance, and the light of dharma
- The World: For completion, enlightenment, and liberation

Pull one of these cards daily during Vesak and ask: "What is this archetype teaching me about my path to awakening?"
Divination Ethics: Right View in Divination
When working with Vesak divination, remember:
- Don't cling to outcomes: Divination shows possibilities, not fixed destinies. All things are impermanent.
- Use divination as a mirror: It reflects your own wisdom back to you.
- Don't bypass practice: Divination is not a substitute for meditation and ethical living.
- Dedicate the merit: Any insight gained should benefit all beings.
- Trust your Buddha-nature: The ultimate oracle is your own awakened mind.
