Vesica Piscis: Divine Proportion and Meaning

BY NICOLE LAU
The Vesica Piscis represents one of sacred geometry's most fundamental forms—two overlapping circles creating an almond-shaped intersection that symbolizes divine union, the cosmic womb, and the gateway of creation. This guide explores the profound meaning, sacred proportions, and transformative power of this ancient symbol.
What is the Vesica Piscis?
The Vesica Piscis (Latin for "bladder of the fish") forms when two circles of equal size overlap so each circle's edge passes through the other's center. This creates a distinctive almond or lens shape revered across spiritual traditions.
The Geometric Structure
- Two Equal Circles: Representing duality and unity
- Perfect Overlap: Mathematical precision in intersection
- Central Vesica: The sacred almond-shaped space between
- Divine Ratio: Width-to-height ratio of square root 3:1
- Foundation Pattern: First step in creating Flower of Life
The Divine Proportion
The Vesica Piscis embodies the square root of 3 proportion, appearing throughout nature and sacred architecture in equilateral triangles, hexagonal structures, crystal formations, and Gothic cathedrals.

Philosophical Insights
The Third Way
The vesica represents transcendence of duality—not choosing between opposites but integrating them. The middle way, paradox holding, the sacred marriage of opposites.
Creation from Union
Nothing new comes from one alone. Creation requires union, intersection, relationship. The space between is where magic happens.
Conclusion: The Gateway of Becoming
The Vesica Piscis reminds us that all creation emerges from union, that the sacred space between opposites is where new life begins, and that the divine feminine principle is fundamental to existence itself.
As you work with the Vesica Piscis, you're connecting with the primal creative force that brings form from void, life from potential, manifestation from intention. You're honoring the divine feminine, the cosmic womb, the sacred gateway through which all existence passes.
May you recognize the Vesica Piscis in your life—in moments of union, creative breakthroughs, and the birth of new possibilities.
