Wheel of Fortune (X): Cycles & Randomness
Share
BY NICOLE LAU
Wheel of Fortune is cycles and randomness. Wheel rotating with Sphinx (stability), Anubis ascending (rise), Typhon descending (fall). This is periodic functions, stochastic processes, the interplay of determinism and chance. Life has cycles (seasons, economies, moods) and randomness (luck, accidents, opportunities). The principle: accept the wheel; what goes up must come down, what goes down will rise again.
Traditional Meaning
Upright: Good luck, karma, life cycles, destiny, turning point. Reversed: Bad luck, resistance to change, breaking cycles. Symbolism: Wheel (cycles), Sphinx (stability), Anubis (rise), Typhon (fall), YHVH (divine name), four creatures (fixed signs, stability amid change).
As Archetype: The Cycle
Wheel of Fortune is the state of cyclical change. After Hermit's isolation, re-engagement with life's ups and downs. Represents periodic systems: sine waves, seasons, economic cycles. Also randomness: probability, luck, stochastic events. Life is both: predictable cycles + unpredictable events.
Cross-System Correspondences
Kabbalah: Kaph path, Chesed to Netzach. Astrology: Jupiter (expansion, luck, fortune). Alchemy: Wheel of elements. I Ching: Hexagram 24 (Return). Chakra: All chakras (cycles affect whole system).
Psychology
Jungian: Synchronicity, meaningful coincidence. Developmental: Acceptance of life's ups and downs. Shadow: Resistance to change vs flow, victim mentality vs agency.
Cycles & Randomness
Deterministic cycles: predictable (seasons, lunar phases). Stochastic processes: random but with patterns (stock market, weather). Life is both. Wheel teaches: ride the cycles, accept randomness, maintain equanimity. What's up will fall, what's down will rise. This too shall pass.
Dynamics
Constantly changing. Wheel state is motion itself. No stability, only rotation. Acceptance of change → peace. Resistance → suffering. Exit via integration (Justice - balance amid change).
Practical Navigation
Accept cycles, don't cling to highs or lows, prepare for change, find stability within (Sphinx), trust the process. Wheel teaches: impermanence is the only permanence.
Conclusion
Wheel of Fortune (X) is cycles and randomness. Periodic functions, stochastic processes, ups and downs. After introspection (Hermit), comes re-engagement with life's wheel. Ride it wisely.
