Why Highly Sensitive People Are Drawn to the Occult

Why Highly Sensitive People Are Drawn to the Occult

It is not because we are more credulous. It is not because we are more desperate for meaning. It is not because we have failed to find adequate explanations in mainstream frameworks.

It is because the occult tradition is one of the few bodies of knowledge that takes our experience seriously.

This sounds simple. It is not. To understand what it means, you have to understand what it is like to move through the world as a highly sensitive person in a culture that does not have good frameworks for what you are experiencing.

The Problem of Being Taken Seriously

Highly sensitive people spend a significant portion of their lives being told, in various ways, that their experience is not quite real.

You are too sensitive. You are reading too much into things. You are imagining it. You are being paranoid. You are making things up. You are too emotional. You need to toughen up. You need to stop overthinking. You need to learn to let things go.

These responses are not malicious. They come from people who genuinely do not have the experience of receiving the world at the resolution that highly sensitive people receive it. They are not lying when they say they don't sense what you sense. They genuinely don't. And because they don't, the most available explanation for your experience is that something is wrong with you — that you are misreading, misinterpreting, overreacting.

The cumulative effect of this, over years and decades, is a specific kind of self-doubt: the doubt of someone who has learned that their perceptions are not reliable, that their felt sense of situations cannot be trusted, that the information they receive is probably distorted by their own sensitivity rather than accurately reflecting reality.

This self-doubt is one of the most damaging things that happens to highly sensitive people. Because the perceptions are often accurate. The felt sense is often reliable. The information is real. And learning to distrust it — learning to override the signal with the social consensus that nothing is happening — is learning to be less functional, not more.

What the Occult Tradition Offers

The occult tradition, at its best, offers something that mainstream culture rarely does: a serious, systematic engagement with the proposition that there is more information available in any given moment than most people consciously register, and that developing sensitivity to this information is a legitimate and valuable practice.

This is not a minor thing. It is, for many highly sensitive people, the first time they have encountered a framework that treats their experience as data rather than dysfunction.

The concept of energy — of the felt quality of people, spaces, and situations as real information rather than subjective noise — gives language to experiences that have been nameless. The concept of psychic sensitivity — of some people being more attuned to subtle information than others — normalizes what has felt like an anomaly. The concept of energetic protection — of the need to manage the continuous influx of information and emotion that sensitive people experience — validates the exhaustion that has been dismissed as weakness.

The tradition says: what you are experiencing is real. It has been experienced by others. There are names for it, frameworks for understanding it, and practices for working with it. You are not broken. You are calibrated differently.

That recognition is not nothing. For many people, it is the beginning of a fundamentally different relationship with their own experience.

The Language Problem

One of the most practically useful things the occult tradition offers is language.

Language is not just a way of communicating experience. It is a way of organizing it. When you have words for something, you can think about it more clearly, communicate it more precisely, and work with it more deliberately. When you don't have words for something, it remains diffuse — a felt sense that you can't quite grasp, that you can't share with others, that you can't examine systematically.

Highly sensitive people often spend years with experiences they cannot name. The felt quality of a space. The sense of someone's unexpressed emotion arriving in their body. The knowledge that something is about to change. The exhaustion of continuous high-resolution processing. These are real experiences. But without language for them, they remain private, unexamined, and impossible to discuss.

The occult tradition provides language. Energy. Aura. Psychic sensitivity. Empathy in its original sense. Grounding. Shielding. Clearing. These words are imperfect — they carry associations that can obscure as well as illuminate. But they are words. They make the experience speakable. And speakable experience can be examined, shared, and worked with in ways that unspeakable experience cannot.

The Community Problem

Alongside the language problem is the community problem: the difficulty of finding other people who share your experience.

Highly sensitive people are a minority — roughly 15-20% of the population, according to current research. In most social environments, they are surrounded by people who do not share their level of sensitivity and who therefore cannot fully understand their experience. The isolation this produces is real and significant.

The occult community, whatever its other characteristics, tends to attract a disproportionate number of highly sensitive people. This is not coincidental. It is because the tradition offers the language and framework that sensitive people are looking for, and because the community that forms around that tradition tends to include others who have had similar experiences.

Finding people who understand what you mean when you say you felt the energy of a room, or that you knew something was wrong before anything happened, or that you are exhausted from absorbing other people's emotions — this is not a small thing. It is the experience of being recognized. Of not having to explain or justify or defend your experience before you can discuss it.

The Limits of the Tradition

I want to be honest about the limits of what the occult tradition offers, because the picture is not entirely positive.

The tradition can also inflate experience in ways that are not helpful. The move from "I am highly sensitive" to "I am psychic" to "I have special powers" to "I am chosen" is a move that some people make, and it is not a move toward greater clarity or greater function. It is a move toward a different kind of distortion — one that replaces the self-doubt of the dismissed sensitive person with the grandiosity of the special one.

The tradition can also provide frameworks that are too rigid — that explain everything through a single lens and therefore miss the complexity of what is actually happening. Not every felt sense is energy. Not every difficult experience is a psychic attack. Not every sensitivity is a gift. Sometimes things are what they appear to be, and the occult framework, applied indiscriminately, can obscure rather than illuminate.

The tradition is most useful when it is held lightly — as a set of frameworks and practices that illuminate some things and not others, that are useful in some contexts and not all, that provide language and community without requiring the abandonment of critical thinking.

Used this way, it is genuinely valuable. Not because it explains everything. Because it takes the experience seriously enough to try.

Next and final in this series: The cost of knowing — and how to carry it. The exhaustion of high sensitivity, the necessity of boundaries, and the practices that actually help.

The Way to Deepen Your Practice: 6 Grounded Anchors

When a practice feels restless or distracted, it is rarely a lack of discipline. More often, your nervous system is simply waiting for a physical cue that it is safe to arrive.

Insight remains abstract until it touches your physical world. Reflecting As Above, So Below, a sacred practice begins wherever you set an intentional boundary—draping a woven cloth where noise stops, attuning to an acoustic frequency, or taking up raw materials to forge an implement with your own hands.

You do not need an entire sanctuary built at once. A single deliberate anchor is enough to call you back home to yourself.
