Working with Inanna: Complete Guide to the Sumerian Goddess of Heaven and Earth

Working with Inanna: Complete Guide to the Sumerian Goddess of Heaven and Earth

Who Is Inanna?

Inanna is the Sumerian goddess of love, war, justice, political power, and the planet Venus — the most important goddess in the ancient Mesopotamian tradition and one of the oldest named deities in human history. She is the Queen of Heaven and Earth, the goddess who holds the me — the divine laws and powers that govern all of civilization — and who descends into the underworld and returns, enacting the most ancient death-and-rebirth mystery in recorded human history. Her Akkadian counterpart is Ishtar, and her mythology is preserved in some of the oldest written texts in the world, inscribed on clay tablets in cuneiform script more than four thousand years ago.

Inanna is a goddess of extraordinary complexity and power. She is simultaneously the goddess of erotic love and the goddess of war, the goddess of justice and the goddess of political power, the goddess of the morning star and the evening star (the planet Venus in its two aspects). She is not a gentle goddess — she is fierce, passionate, demanding, and absolutely sovereign. She takes what she wants, she goes where she chooses, she descends into the darkest places and returns transformed. She is the most complete expression of the divine feminine in its full power — not the nurturing mother or the gentle healer but the sovereign queen who holds all power in her hands and uses it without apology.

Her primary temple was the Eanna temple at Uruk — one of the oldest cities in the world — where she was worshipped as the city's divine patron and sovereign. The sacred marriage ritual — the hieros gamos — was performed annually at her temple, in which the king of Uruk ritually married Inanna to ensure the fertility and prosperity of the land. This ritual established Inanna as the source of all legitimate political power: the king ruled only because Inanna chose him, and his power lasted only as long as she favored him.

Inanna's Mythology

The Descent of Inanna

The most famous and most profound myth of Inanna is the story of her descent into the underworld — the Great Below, the realm of her sister Ereshkigal, the queen of the dead. Inanna decides to descend into the underworld — the reasons given in the text are various, but the deepest reason is that she must: the descent is her destiny, the necessary journey that will transform her from a powerful goddess into a fully realized divine being who has faced death and returned.

At each of the seven gates of the underworld, Inanna is stripped of one of her divine attributes: her crown, her lapis lazuli necklace, her double strand of beads, her breastplate, her golden ring, her measuring rod and line, and finally her royal robe. She arrives in the underworld naked and bowed low — stripped of everything that defined her power and identity. Ereshkigal kills her and hangs her corpse on a hook.

After three days and three nights, Inanna's faithful servant Ninshubur carries out her instructions and appeals to the gods for help. Enki (the god of wisdom) creates two beings from the dirt under his fingernails and sends them to the underworld with the food and water of life. They revive Inanna, but she cannot leave the underworld without sending a substitute. She returns to the upper world accompanied by demons, and ultimately sends her husband Dumuzi to take her place — the shepherd king who did not mourn her death becomes the one who must die in her place.

This myth is the oldest written death-and-rebirth narrative in human history — older than the myths of Osiris, older than the story of Persephone, older than the resurrection narratives of later traditions. It is the foundational story of the descent into darkness and the return transformed, the stripping away of all identity and the discovery of what remains when everything has been taken.

Inanna and the Me

One of the most important myths of Inanna is the story of how she obtained the me — the divine laws and powers that govern all of civilization — from Enki, the god of wisdom. Inanna traveled to Enki's home in the abzu (the underground freshwater ocean) and, through a combination of charm and cunning (and a great deal of beer), persuaded Enki to give her the me. She loaded them onto her boat and sailed back to Uruk, where she distributed them to her city. The me include: kingship, the descent to the underworld, the ascent from the underworld, the art of lovemaking, the art of music, the art of heroism, the art of power, truth, descent, ascent — the full spectrum of civilized human activity. Inanna holds all of these powers and distributes them to humanity.

Inanna Rituals and Practices

The Descent Meditation

Inanna's descent is the foundational model of the journey into the underworld. This meditation follows her path through the seven gates:

  1. Sit comfortably in a darkened room. Close your eyes. Take several slow, deep breaths.
  2. Visualize yourself standing before the first gate of the underworld. Inanna stands beside you.
  3. At each gate, you are asked to release something: at the first gate, your crown (your status and identity); at the second, your necklace (your beauty and adornment); at the third, your breastplate (your protection); at the fourth, your ring (your power); at the fifth, your measuring rod (your ability to judge and measure); at the sixth, your robe (your last covering). At the seventh gate, you stand naked and bowed low.
  4. In this nakedness, ask: “What remains when everything has been stripped away? What is the essential self that survives the descent?”
  5. Sit in this nakedness for as long as you can bear it. Then feel the food and water of life being offered to you. Feel yourself reviving. Feel yourself rising back through the gates, each attribute restored.
  6. Return to ordinary consciousness. Write what you found at the bottom of the descent.

The Morning Star Invocation

On any morning when Venus is visible in the pre-dawn sky, go outside and face the morning star. Say:

“Inanna, Queen of Heaven, I see your star. I greet you in your morning aspect — the light that rises before the sun, the first brightness in the dark sky. You who descended into the Great Below and returned, you who hold all the me of civilization in your hands — I honor you. Let your morning light illuminate my day. Let your sovereign power move through my work. Hail Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth.”

The Sovereignty Practice

Inanna is the goddess of sovereignty — of the power that comes from divine sanction, from being fully oneself, from holding one's power without apology. When you need to access your own sovereign power:

“Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I call upon your sovereign power. I am [describe the situation requiring sovereign power]. Help me to stand in my full power. Help me to hold the me of my own life — the divine laws and powers that are mine to govern. Let me be as unapologetically powerful as you are. Let me take what is mine. Let me go where I choose. Let me be the queen of my own heaven and earth. Hail Inanna.”

Inanna in Modern Practice

Inanna is the goddess for those who are ready to claim their full power — who have been playing small, who have been apologizing for their ambition, who have been shrinking in the face of what requires the full expression of their sovereign nature. She is the divine permission to be as powerful as you actually are, to hold all the me of your own life without apology, to be the queen of your own heaven and earth.

She is also the goddess of the descent — of the willingness to go into the darkest places, to be stripped of everything, to face what is most feared, and to return transformed. Her descent is not a punishment but a choice — she goes because she must, because the full realization of her divine nature requires the journey through the underworld. This is the teaching she offers: the descent is not the end. The stripping away is not destruction. What remains when everything has been taken is the essential self — the self that cannot be destroyed, that survives the underworld, that rises again with the food and water of life.

Her eight-pointed star is her most enduring symbol: the star of Venus, the morning and evening star, the light that appears both before the dawn and after the sunset. She is the light at the threshold — the divine presence that marks the transition between night and day, between darkness and light, between the descent and the return. She is always at the threshold, always in motion, always the first light and the last light. This is her gift: the assurance that even in the darkest night, the morning star is coming. Even in the deepest descent, the return is possible. Inanna descended and returned.

For those called to walk her path, there are tools that resonate with her themes of descent, restoration, and sovereign power. The 13 New Moon Rituals offer a way to honor the nightly transitions she governs, while the Void Whisper Audio guides the listener into the quiet, stripped spaces where the essential self is found. The Cosmic Alignment Ritual Kit helps align with the celestial flow of Venus, and the Divine Union Alignment Audio calls in the sovereign partnership Inanna herself embodies. The Sacred Space Cleanse provides a way to clear the space for any deep descent work, ensuring the return is as powerful as the journey down.
