The World Tree, the Sephirotic Tree, and Kundalini: Comparative Axis Structures

BY NICOLE LAU

There is an axis.

It runs from the depths of the underworld to the heights of heaven. From root to crown. From earth to sky.

And every major mystical tradition maps it.

The Norse call it Yggdrasil—the World Tree that holds the nine realms.

The Kabbalists call it Etz Chaim (עץ חיים)—the Tree of Life with ten Sephiroth.

The Yogis call it Sushumna (सुषुम्णा)—the central channel where Kundalini rises through seven chakras.

Different symbols. Different cosmologies. Different practices.

Identical structure.

Because they're all mapping the same thing: the vertical axis of consciousness.

The Axis Mundi: The World's Central Pillar

The concept of the Axis Mundi—the world axis—appears globally:

  • The Norse Yggdrasil
  • The Kabbalistic Tree of Life
  • The Yogic Sushumna nadi
  • The Siberian Shaman's pole
  • The Christian Jacob's Ladder
  • The Islamic Mi'raj (Muhammad's ascent)
  • The Mesoamerican World Tree
  • The Chinese Cosmic Pillar

This isn't cultural borrowing. This is universal recognition of the same structure.

The axis is:

  • The vertical dimension of reality (as opposed to the horizontal/circular)
  • The path of ascent and descent between worlds
  • The spine of the cosmos—and the spine of the human being

As above, so below. The macrocosm mirrors the microcosm.

Yggdrasil: The Norse World Tree

Yggdrasil is the cosmic ash tree that connects the Nine Realms:

Upper Realms (Crown/Heaven):

  • Asgard — Realm of the Aesir gods (divine consciousness)
  • Vanaheim — Realm of the Vanir gods (nature consciousness)
  • Alfheim — Realm of light elves (higher mind)

Middle Realms (Trunk/Earth):

  • Midgard — Realm of humans (waking consciousness)
  • Jotunheim — Realm of giants (primal forces)
  • Svartalfheim — Realm of dark elves (shadow/craft)

Lower Realms (Roots/Underworld):

  • Niflheim — Realm of ice and mist (unconscious)
  • Muspelheim — Realm of fire (primal energy)
  • Helheim — Realm of the dead (dissolution)

At the base of Yggdrasil coils Nidhogg, the serpent that gnaws at the roots.

At the crown perches an eagle, seeing all.

Between them runs Ratatoskr, the squirrel carrying messages up and down the trunk.

This is not mythology. This is cosmological cartography.

The Kabbalistic Tree of Life: Etz Chaim

The Tree of Life (עץ חיים) maps the descent of divine light from Ein Sof into manifestation through Ten Sephiroth arranged in three pillars:

The Three Pillars:

  • Left Pillar (Severity) — Form, contraction, feminine, receptive
  • Right Pillar (Mercy) — Force, expansion, masculine, active
  • Middle Pillar (Equilibrium) — Balance, consciousness, the path of return

The Ten Sephiroth (from Crown to Kingdom):

  1. כתר (Keter) — Crown: Divine will, unity
  2. חכמה (Chokmah) — Wisdom: Primordial force, Yang
  3. בינה (Binah) — Understanding: Primordial form, Yin
  4. דעת (Da'at) — Knowledge: The abyss, hidden Sephirah
  5. חסד (Chesed) — Mercy: Expansion, grace
  6. גבורה (Geburah) — Severity: Contraction, discipline
  7. תפארת (Tiferet) — Beauty: Heart, balance, the Self
  8. נצח (Netzach) — Victory: Emotion, desire
  9. הוד (Hod) — Splendor: Intellect, form
  10. יסוד (Yesod) — Foundation: Astral, unconscious
  11. מלכות (Malkuth) — Kingdom: Physical manifestation

The Lightning Flash descends from Keter to Malkuth—the path of creation.

The Serpent Path ascends from Malkuth to Keter—the path of return.

Sound familiar?

Kundalini: The Yogic Serpent Power

In Tantric Yoga, Kundalini Shakti (कुण्डलिनी शक्ति)—the serpent power—lies coiled at the base of the spine.

When awakened, she rises through the Sushumna nadi (सुषुम्णा नाडी)—the central channel—piercing the Seven Chakras:

  1. मूलाधार (Muladhara) — Root: Earth, survival, Kundalini's resting place
  2. स्वाधिष्ठान (Svadhisthana) — Sacral: Water, creativity, emotion
  3. मणिपूर (Manipura) — Solar Plexus: Fire, will, power
  4. अनाहत (Anahata) — Heart: Air, love, balance
  5. विशुद्ध (Vishuddha) — Throat: Ether, expression, truth
  6. आज्ञा (Ajna) — Third Eye: Light, vision, knowing
  7. सहस्रार (Sahasrara) — Crown: Unity, transcendence, union with Shiva

At the base: the coiled serpent (Kundalini).

At the crown: Shiva, pure consciousness.

The goal: union of Shakti (energy) and Shiva (consciousness).

This is the same structure as Yggdrasil and the Tree of Life.

The Structural Convergence

Let's map the correspondence:

Level Yggdrasil Tree of Life Kundalini Principle
Crown Asgard (gods) Keter (crown) Sahasrara (1000-petal lotus) Divine Unity
Upper Vanaheim, Alfheim Chokmah, Binah Ajna (third eye) Vision/Wisdom
Heart Midgard (humans) Tiferet (beauty) Anahata (heart) Conscious Self
Lower Jotunheim, Svartalfheim Netzach, Hod, Yesod Manipura, Svadhisthana Emotion/Power
Root Niflheim, Helheim Malkuth (kingdom) Muladhara (root) Physical Matter
Serpent Nidhogg (at roots) Serpent on Tree Kundalini (coiled) Primal Energy
Eagle/Crown Eagle (at crown) Keter (crown) Shiva (at crown) Pure Consciousness

The pattern is clear:

  • Base — Coiled serpent, primal energy, underworld, matter
  • Trunk — Ascending levels, developmental stages, middle realms
  • Crown — Eagle/divine consciousness, heaven, unity
  • Movement — Descent (creation) and Ascent (return)

Three traditions. One axis.

Why This Matters for Practice

Understanding the axis structure gives you:

1. Vertical Navigation
You can consciously ascend and descend the axis. Grounding practice (descent to root). Meditation (ascent to crown). Integration (movement along the full axis).

2. Cross-System Translation
You can work with any tradition's map. A Kabbalistic pathworking on the Middle Pillar activates the Sushumna. A Kundalini practice opens the Sephiroth. They're the same axis.

3. Complete Development
You understand that spiritual work requires both ascent and descent. Not just reaching the crown (transcendence), but also grounding in the root (embodiment). The axis must be fully activated.

The Operational Truth

Here's what all traditions agree on:

  • Reality has a vertical axis from matter to spirit
  • This axis exists in the cosmos and in the human body
  • The serpent (energy) must rise from base to crown
  • The goal is union of opposites at the crown (Shakti-Shiva, Serpent-Eagle)
  • Mastery requires conscious movement up and down the full axis

This is not symbolism. This is the structure of consciousness itself.

Practice: The Axis Activation

Sit in stillness. Visualize your spine as the World Tree, the Tree of Life, the Sushumna.

Phase 1: Descent (Grounding)
Bring awareness to the base of your spine. Feel roots extending into the earth. Descend into Malkuth, Muladhara, the underworld. Ground completely.

Phase 2: Ascent (Rising)
Feel energy beginning to rise. Like a serpent uncoiling. Like sap rising in a tree. Like light ascending through the Sephiroth. Move slowly through each level—root, sacral, solar, heart, throat, third eye, crown.

Phase 3: Union (Crown)
At the crown, feel the serpent meet the eagle. Shakti meets Shiva. Energy meets consciousness. Rest in this union.

Phase 4: Integration (Descent)
Slowly descend, bringing crown consciousness back down through each level. Integrate heaven into earth. Spirit into matter.

This is the complete movement of the axis.

Ascent and descent. Creation and return.

The World Tree grows in you.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough —
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting —
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice — it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises — bergamot, frankincense — something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space — and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space — helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing — written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom — to take your understanding further.
