Wunjo Rune Meditation: Cultivating Deep Joy & Inner Harmony

Wunjo (ᚹ) is the rune of joy — not the fleeting happiness of a pleasant moment, but the deep, settled wellbeing of a life in harmony with itself. To meditate with Wunjo is to remember joy as a fundamental state rather than a temporary experience: to reconnect with the part of you that is, beneath all the suffering and struggle, essentially well. This is the most radical thing Wunjo offers — not the promise that circumstances will improve, but the reminder that joy is your natural state, and that returning to it is always possible.
This meditation is particularly powerful for: healing chronic depression or persistent sorrow, reconnecting with joy after a period of difficulty, cultivating a more positive fundamental orientation toward life, bringing harmony to inner conflict and discord, and anchoring yourself in genuine wellbeing as a practice rather than waiting for circumstances to produce it.
Before You Begin
Light a yellow or gold candle. If possible, sit where natural light can reach you — Wunjo's energy is amplified by sunlight. Have something sweet nearby — apple slices, honey, a piece of fruit — to eat after the meditation as a physical integration of Wunjo's energy. If you have a Wunjo rune stone or amulet, hold it in your non-dominant hand.
Before closing your eyes, take a moment to notice three things in your immediate environment that are genuinely beautiful or pleasant. This small act of appreciation is Wunjo's entry point — the practice of noticing what is already good, already harmonious, already a source of joy.
Part One: The Body of Joy
Close your eyes. Take three slow, deep breaths. With each exhale, release any tension, worry, or heaviness you are carrying. You are not trying to force joy; you are simply creating space for it to arise naturally.
Bring your attention to your body. Scan slowly from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet, noticing where your body feels comfortable, at ease, or pleasant. Even in the midst of difficulty, there are usually places in the body that feel okay — a relaxed hand, a comfortable shoulder, the pleasant weight of your body in the chair. Find these places and rest your attention there.
This is Wunjo's first teaching: joy is already present in the body, even when the mind is troubled. The body knows how to be at ease; it is the mind that creates suffering. By resting attention in the body's areas of ease, you begin to access Wunjo's energy directly, without needing to manufacture it mentally.
Part Two: The Memory of Joy
Now bring to mind a memory of genuine joy — a moment when you felt truly happy, truly at ease, truly yourself. It does not need to be a dramatic moment; often the most powerful joy memories are simple ones: a perfect afternoon, a moment of laughter with someone you love, a creative flow state, a time in nature when everything felt right.
Let the memory become vivid. See it, hear it, feel it in your body. Where do you feel the joy of this memory physically? In your chest? Your face? Your belly? Let the feeling expand — not by forcing it, but by giving it your full, warm attention. Joy expands when it is noticed and welcomed.
Now understand: this joy is not just a memory. It is a demonstration of your capacity for joy — proof that this state is available to you, that it is part of your nature. You have felt this before. You can feel it again. Wunjo is the rune that helps you remember this.
Part Three: The Banner of Wunjo
In your mind's eye, see the Wunjo rune (ᚹ) — a banner flying from a tall pole, its triangular flag catching the wind. The banner is gold, bright against a blue sky. It flies over a Norse longhouse where a celebration is underway — you can hear laughter, music, the sound of people genuinely happy together.
This is Wunjo's world: not a world without difficulty, but a world where joy is the fundamental orientation, where celebration is a practice, where the community gathers regularly to affirm that life is good and worth living. The Norse did not wait for perfect circumstances to celebrate; they created celebration as a practice, a discipline, a way of maintaining the energy of joy even through the long dark winters.
Enter the longhouse. Feel the warmth of the fire, the warmth of the people. You belong here — this is your community, your clan, your soul family. Feel the joy of belonging, of being known and welcomed, of being part of something larger than yourself. This is Wunjo's deepest gift: not solitary happiness, but the joy of genuine connection.
Part Four: Harmonizing the Discord
With Wunjo's joy fully present in your body, bring to mind any area of your life that feels discordant — any relationship, situation, or inner conflict that is out of harmony. Hold it gently in your awareness, surrounded by Wunjo's golden light.
Ask Wunjo: "What would bring harmony here?" Do not analyze — simply feel. Wunjo's answer is always felt rather than thought: a relaxation, a softening, a sense of what would make this situation more harmonious. Trust what arises.
You do not need to solve the discord in this meditation. Simply holding it in Wunjo's light — in the energy of joy and harmony — begins to shift it. Joy is not naive; it does not pretend that problems do not exist. It simply refuses to let problems be the final word.
Part Five: The Wunjo Galdr
With joy fully present in your body and Wunjo's harmonizing energy active, begin the Galdr. Take a deep breath. On the exhale, chant: "Wuuuun-jo" — warm, bright, genuinely joyful. Let a smile come to your face as you chant — the physical act of smiling activates the same neural pathways as genuine happiness, and Wunjo responds to this. The “Wun” should resonate in your chest; the “jo” should open and brighten.
Chant nine times. With each repetition, feel the joy in your body growing more stable, more settled, more like a permanent quality of your being rather than a temporary state. By the ninth chant, you may feel a warmth and lightness in your chest that is Wunjo's energy fully activated.
Part Six: Closing
After the Galdr, sit quietly for a few minutes. Feel the quality of Wunjo's joy — not excitement, not euphoria, but the deep, settled happiness of being in right relationship with yourself and your life. Let this feeling settle into your body as your new baseline — the state you are returning to, rather than the state you are trying to reach.
Open your eyes slowly. Eat the sweet thing you prepared — let the physical sweetness be a seal of Wunjo's energy in your body. Then go do something that genuinely brings you joy, however small.
Wunjo Meditation for Specific Situations
For depression: Practice the shortened version of this meditation — Parts One, Two, and Five — every morning for 21 consecutive days. Wunjo builds joy gradually and cumulatively; consistency matters more than intensity. The Galdr practice alone, done daily, can shift the fundamental orientation of the nervous system toward joy over time.
Before social gatherings: A five-minute Wunjo meditation before any social event — particularly ones you are anxious about — shifts your energy from anxiety to genuine warmth and openness, making connection easier and more natural.
For group harmony: If you are leading or participating in a group — a meeting, a family gathering, a creative collaboration — a brief Wunjo Galdr practice before the group convenes sets a field of harmony and positive energy that benefits everyone present.
