Yoga and the Chakras: The Original Connection

BY NICOLE LAU
Before yoga became a fitness trend, before it was about flexibility or Instagram-worthy poses, it was a spiritual technology designed for one purpose: to awaken and balance the chakra system, allowing life force energy (prana) to flow freely through the body and ultimately achieve union with the divine.
The word "yoga" means unionβthe union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness, the union of body and spirit, the union of the lower self with the higher self. And the primary vehicle for this union is the chakra system: seven energy centers aligned along the spine, each governing specific physical, emotional, and spiritual functions.
Every yoga pose, every breath practice, every meditation technique in the traditional system was designed with the chakras in mind. When you practice yoga without understanding the chakras, you're using a powerful spiritual tool without knowing what it's for. It's like having a key but not knowing which door it opens.
This article is your introduction to the original connection between yoga and the chakrasβthe foundation upon which all yoga practice is built.
What Are the Chakras?
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning "wheel" or "disk." Chakras are spinning vortexes of energy located along the central channel of the body (the sushumna nadi), running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
While there are many minor chakras throughout the body, the seven major chakras are the primary focus of yoga practice:
- Muladhara (Root Chakra): Base of spine
- Svadhisthana (Sacral Chakra): Lower abdomen
- Manipura (Solar Plexus Chakra): Upper abdomen
- Anahata (Heart Chakra): Center of chest
- Vishuddha (Throat Chakra): Throat
- Ajna (Third Eye Chakra): Between eyebrows
- Sahasrara (Crown Chakra): Top of head
Each chakra has specific characteristics:
- A location in the physical body
- A color vibration
- An element association
- A sound (bija mantra)
- A number of lotus petals
- Physical organs and systems it governs
- Emotional and psychological themes
- Spiritual lessons and gifts
When chakras are balanced and open, energy flows freely and you experience physical health, emotional stability, and spiritual connection. When chakras are blocked or imbalanced, you experience dysfunction in the corresponding areas of life.

How Yoga Works with the Chakras
Every aspect of traditional yoga practice is designed to balance and activate the chakras:
Asana (Physical Poses)
Different poses affect different chakras based on where they create compression, expansion, or energy flow:
- Standing poses activate the root chakra (grounding, stability)
- Hip openers activate the sacral chakra (creativity, emotion)
- Core work and twists activate the solar plexus (power, transformation)
- Backbends and heart openers activate the heart chakra (love, compassion)
- Shoulder and neck work activates the throat chakra (expression)
- Forward folds and balancing poses activate the third eye (intuition, insight)
- Inversions and meditation activate the crown chakra (spiritual connection)
Pranayama (Breath Work)
Breath is the primary vehicle for moving prana (life force) through the chakra system. Different breathing techniques affect the chakras differently:
- Ujjayi breath (ocean breath) calms the nervous system and balances all chakras
- Kapalabhati (skull-shining breath) activates solar plexus and clears energy
- Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) balances left and right channels, harmonizing all chakras
- Bhramari (bee breath) activates throat and third eye chakras
Mantra (Sound)
Each chakra has a bija (seed) mantraβa sound vibration that activates and balances that energy center. Chanting these mantras during practice directly affects the chakras.
Meditation and Visualization
Focusing awareness on specific chakras, visualizing their colors, and meditating on their qualities activates and balances them.
Bandhas (Energy Locks)
Bandhas are muscular contractions that direct energy flow:
- Mula bandha (root lock) activates root chakra
- Uddiyana bandha (abdominal lock) activates solar plexus
- Jalandhara bandha (throat lock) activates throat chakra
The Chakra Journey: From Root to Crown
The chakra system represents a developmental journey from the physical to the spiritual:
Lower Chakras (1-3): The Physical Realm
- Root: Survival and safety
- Sacral: Pleasure and creativity
- Solar Plexus: Power and identity
These chakras govern your relationship with the physical world, your body, and your individual self.
Heart Chakra (4): The Bridge
- Heart: Love and connection
The heart chakra is the bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, between self and other, between earth and heaven.
Upper Chakras (5-7): The Spiritual Realm
- Throat: Expression and truth
- Third Eye: Intuition and wisdom
- Crown: Unity and transcendence
These chakras govern your relationship with truth, consciousness, and the divine.
Traditional yoga practice works from the bottom up: first establishing stability and safety (root), then accessing creativity and emotion (sacral), then claiming personal power (solar plexus), then opening the heart, then finding authentic expression (throat), then developing intuition (third eye), and finally achieving spiritual union (crown).
Assessing Your Chakra Balance
To work effectively with the chakras through yoga, you need to know which chakras need attention. Here's a simple assessment:
For each chakra, ask:
- Do I experience the balanced qualities of this chakra?
- Do I experience the imbalanced symptoms?
- Does this area of my life feel easy or challenging?
The chakras that show the most imbalance are where you should focus your yoga practice.
Chakra-Focused Yoga Practice
Once you know which chakras need balancing, you can design your practice accordingly:
For Underactive Chakras (blocked, weak, closed):
- Practice poses that activate and open that chakra
- Use the corresponding color in your practice space
- Chant the bija mantra
- Work with the associated element
- Focus on developing the balanced qualities
For Overactive Chakras (excessive, dominant, ungrounded):
- Practice grounding poses
- Balance with work on underactive chakras
- Practice moderation and restraint
- Focus on integration rather than activation
The Kundalini Connection
In yogic philosophy, kundalini is the dormant spiritual energy that rests coiled at the base of the spine (root chakra). The ultimate goal of yoga is to awaken this kundalini energy and guide it up through all seven chakras to the crown, achieving enlightenment.
This is why yoga practice emphasizes:
- Clearing blockages in the chakras
- Strengthening the energy channels (nadis)
- Building the container (physical and energetic body) to handle increased energy
- Cultivating awareness and consciousness
While full kundalini awakening is rare and requires dedicated practice under guidance, every yoga session moves energy through your chakra system and contributes to this awakening process.
Integrating Chakra Awareness into Your Practice
You don't need to completely restructure your yoga practice to work with the chakras. Simply bringing awareness to the chakra system transforms your practice:
Before Practice:
- Set an intention related to a specific chakra
- Assess which chakras feel blocked or imbalanced
- Choose a focus chakra for the session
During Practice:
- Notice which chakras are activated in each pose
- Visualize energy flowing through the chakra system
- Use breath to direct energy to specific chakras
- Chant bija mantras silently or aloud
After Practice:
- Notice shifts in your energy and awareness
- Journal about chakra-related insights
- Observe how chakra work affects your daily life
Moving Forward in This Series
This article establishes the foundation. In the coming articles, we'll explore:
