You Are the Bridge: Understanding Yourself as a Link in the Ancestral Chain
Share
There is a way of understanding the self that is larger than the individual life — a way that places the individual not at the center of their own story but at the meeting point of two vast streams: the stream of all the lives that came before, flowing forward through time to reach this moment, and the stream of all the lives that will come after, waiting behind this moment to receive what is passed on. From this perspective, the individual is not the protagonist of a story that begins at birth and ends at death. The individual is a link in a chain that extends backward to the first human ancestors and forward to the last — a bridge between what has been and what is yet to be.
This is the understanding that African ancestral traditions express when they say: you are not just yourself. You are your parents, your grandparents, your great-grandparents, and all the ancestors before them — their strength, their wounds, their wisdom, their unfinished business — and you are also all the descendants who will come from you, carrying forward what you have built, healed, or left unresolved. The weight of this understanding is not burden but responsibility in the most fundamental sense: the ability to respond, to act in the present in ways that honor the past and serve the future.
The Three Streams: Past, Present, Future
The African understanding of time is not linear in the Western sense — not a line moving from past through present into future with each dimension sealed off from the others. Time is relational: the past is present in the ancestors who are still active and aware; the future is present in the unborn who have already begun their relationship with the lineage; and the present moment is the place where both streams meet and where the work of the living is done.
This understanding has a practical implication for how the present moment is inhabited: every choice made in the present is simultaneously a response to the ancestors (honoring or wasting what they built and passed forward) and a message to the descendants (establishing the conditions and the legacy that the future will receive). The question that the bridge-understanding brings to every significant choice is: does this honor those who came before, and does this serve those who will come after?
Receiving Ancestral Power
The understanding of oneself as a link in the ancestral chain makes possible a form of access to ancestral power that is not available to the isolated individual: the recognition that the strength, the resilience, the spiritual intelligence, and the hard-won wisdom of the entire lineage are available resources for the living — not because of any special individual merit, but because of the relationship. The ancestors are invested in the wellbeing of their living descendants. The living are the current expression of the lineage that the ancestors built. The power that the ancestors developed through their experience is not separate from the power available to the living; it is the deeper layer of it.
Calling on ancestral power is not calling on something outside the self. It is calling on the deeper layers of what the self already is — the inheritance of strength that the lineage has built across generations of human experience, available to the one who maintains the relationship through acknowledgment, gratitude, and the ongoing practice of ancestral connection.
What You Will Pass Forward
The final dimension of the bridge-understanding is prospective: what will you pass forward? The healing you do now is healing that the lineage forward will not have to do. The wisdom you develop now is wisdom that the descendants can receive. The patterns you transform rather than perpetuate are patterns that stop with you rather than being carried forward. Every generation in the lineage has had the opportunity to be this kind of bridge — the one in whom the cycle turns, the one whose healing changes what comes after. You are that bridge now.
