Yule Tarot Ceremony: The Rebirth Reading for the Winter Solstice

Yule falls at the winter solstice β€” December 21st in the Northern Hemisphere β€” the longest night of the year and the precise astronomical moment when the sun's power stops declining and begins, imperceptibly at first, to return. It is the darkest point of the year and simultaneously the turning point: the night from which all subsequent nights will be, by one small increment, shorter than the one before. The ancient Norse called it Jul; the Romans called it Saturnalia; every tradition that has marked the solar year has recognized this night as the night of the great turning β€” the night when the sun is reborn from the womb of the longest darkness.

The Yule tarot ceremony works with this paradox of darkness and rebirth: it enters consciously into the longest night, honors whatever darkness has accumulated in the past year, and uses the tarot to identify the specific quality of light β€” the specific hope, intention, or returning vitality β€” that wants to be born as the sun begins its return.

Setting the Altar for Yule

The Yule altar is an altar of light in the dark: candles above all else, as many as feels right, in red, green, gold, and white. Evergreen branches (pine, holly, ivy) as the symbol of life that persists through the darkness. A Yule log if available β€” or a simple log with candles set in it. Orange slices and cloves for the winter solar festival's warming, citrus-spice quality. Crystals: clear quartz (for the light that is returning), garnet (for the life force that persists through the dark), citrine (for the warmth of the solar energy beginning its restoration). Incense: frankincense and myrrh β€” the classic winter festival resins of the ancient world.

The Yule Tarot Ceremony Layout

A five-card rebirth spread for the winter solstice.

Card 1 β€” The Dark I Am Leaving: What has been the defining darkness of the past year? What weight, what challenge, what shadow has the long night of the year held? Honor it before you leave it.

Card 2 β€” What Survived the Dark: What in you has persisted through the difficulty? Like the evergreen through winter, what quality of yours has remained alive and vital despite the darkness?

Card 3 β€” The Light Being Reborn: What is beginning to return? What new quality, direction, hope, or life energy is at its seed point right now, the first increment of the returning light?

Card 4 β€” What the New Year Wants to Grow Into: If the seed of Card 3 is allowed to grow fully, what does it become? What does the returning light build toward in the months ahead?

Card 5 β€” The Gift of the Longest Night: What has the darkness specifically given you that the light could not? What wisdom, depth, or quality of knowing has the year's difficulty produced that is genuinely yours now?

The Three-Step Ceremony Flow

Opening: Light all the candles in complete darkness β€” begin the ceremony in the dark and light each candle as a deliberate act of calling the light back. As each candle is lit, name one thing you are welcoming back: "I call back my vitality. I call back my hope. I call back my creative fire." Shuffle the deck with the question: "What does this turning point want to teach me?"

Reading: Draw the five cards. Sit with each one in the candlelight. The Yule reading is slow and contemplative β€” the longest night has time in it.

Integration: Write the intentions of the returning year in your journal by candlelight. Place the written intentions under a candle and let the candle burn while you sit with what the reading has shown. On the winter solstice, the tradition of keeping candles burning through the longest night is the oldest light-in-darkness practice there is.
