Compulsion vs. Attraction: How the Fourth Pentacle Differs from the Third
Share
Within the Venus pentacle series of the Key of Solomon, the Third and Fourth Pentacles are the two most directly oriented toward bringing a specific person into the practitioner's life. Both work with Venus's power over love and human connection. Both can be used in workings involving a specific person. But they operate through fundamentally different mechanisms — attraction versus compulsion — and understanding the distinction is essential to choosing the right tool and working with it effectively.
The Third Pentacle of Venus: Attraction
The Third Pentacle of Venus draws love through attraction — through the enhancement of the practitioner's magnetic quality, the creation of conditions favorable to love, and the drawing of the desired person toward the practitioner through the natural force of Venusian attraction. Its operation is harmonious and flowing: it works with the natural currents of love and desire, amplifying and directing them toward the practitioner's intention.
The Third Pentacle's approach is persuasive rather than commanding. It creates the conditions in which the desired person naturally wants to come closer, naturally feels drawn to the practitioner, naturally moves toward connection. The movement is the desired person's own — the Third Pentacle simply creates the conditions that make that movement natural and inevitable.
The Third Pentacle is most appropriate when:
- The connection is in its early stages and needs to be cultivated
- The desired person is generally receptive but needs encouragement
- You want to enhance your natural attractiveness and magnetic quality
- The situation calls for harmony and natural development rather than force
- You want to draw love generally, not just from a specific person
The Fourth Pentacle of Venus: Compulsion
The Fourth Pentacle of Venus operates through direct compulsion — commanding Venusian spirits to obey and causing the designated person to come to the practitioner immediately. Its operation is forceful and direct: it does not work with the natural currents of attraction but overrides them, driving the designated person toward the practitioner regardless of distance or resistance.
The Fourth Pentacle's approach is commanding rather than persuasive. It does not create conditions that make approach natural; it compels approach directly. The movement is driven by the seal's commanding operation rather than by the desired person's natural inclination.
The Fourth Pentacle is most appropriate when:
- There is significant distance or resistance that gentler approaches cannot overcome
- You need a specific person to come to you immediately rather than gradually
- The situation involves separation or estrangement that needs to be overcome decisively
- Gentler approaches have been tried and have not produced results
- You require results rather than the creation of favorable conditions
The Key Distinction: Natural vs. Commanded Movement
The fundamental distinction between the Third and Fourth Pentacles is the nature of the movement they produce. The Third Pentacle produces natural movement — the desired person comes because they want to, because the conditions of attraction have been created. The Fourth Pentacle produces commanded movement — the designated person comes because the seal's compulsion drives them, overriding whatever resistance or inertia was keeping them away.
Neither approach is inherently superior; they are suited to different situations. The Third Pentacle's natural attraction is more harmonious and more sustainable; the Fourth Pentacle's direct compulsion is more forceful and more immediate. Choose based on what your situation actually requires.
Using Both Together
Some practitioners work with both the Third and Fourth Pentacles simultaneously: the Third to create the conditions of natural attraction and the Fourth to compel the specific approach. This combination addresses both the natural and the commanded dimensions of the working, creating both the favorable conditions and the direct compulsion that together produce the most complete result.
