Hexagram 21 Shi He - Complete Guide Part 1: The Symbol and Structure of Biting Through

Shi He is the I Ching’s great hexagram of decisive action — of the genuine biting through that removes the obstacle between the teeth, restores genuine union, and establishes genuine social order. The character shi (噬) means to bite; the character he (盖) means to close, to unite. Together, shi he (噬盖) means biting through — the decisive action that bites through the obstacle between the teeth and closes the mouth in genuine union. Shi He is one of the most practically urgent hexagrams in the I Ching: when an obstacle stands between genuine union, the only path forward is the decisive action that bites through it.

The Structure of Shi He

Binary and Trigram

Shi He is Hexagram 21 in the King Wen sequence. Its binary structure is 101001 — a complex arrangement of yang and yin lines that reflects the dynamic interplay of genuine strength and genuine receptivity that decisive action requires. The fourth line — a yin line in the position of the minister — is the structural key of Shi He: the obstacle between the teeth that the decisive action of the hexagram must bite through. The yang lines above and below the fourth line are the teeth of the open mouth: the genuine strength that bites through the obstacle and restores genuine union.

The Two Trigrams

  • Lower trigram: Zhen (震) — Thunder, Arousing, Movement
Thunder is the image of the genuine arousing force that moves all things — the sudden, decisive energy that breaks through stagnation and initiates genuine movement. In Shi He, the thunder of genuine arousing force is in the lower position: the genuine inner energy that initiates the decisive action of biting through.
  • Upper trigram: Li (離) — Fire, Clarity, Clinging
Fire is the image of genuine clarity — the quality that illuminates all things, that sees clearly the genuine nature of the obstacle, that provides the genuine light that decisive action requires. In Shi He, the fire of genuine clarity is above the thunder of genuine arousing force: the genuine clarity that illuminates the obstacle and guides the decisive action of biting through.

The Image: Thunder and Lightning

The Xiang Zhuan (Image Commentary) states: “Thunder and lightning: the image of Biting Through. Thus the kings of old made firm the laws through clearly defined penalties.”

Thunder and lightning together are the image of genuine decisive action: the sudden, arousing force of thunder combined with the illuminating clarity of lightning. The kings of old who made firm the laws through clearly defined penalties are the political expression of Shi He: the genuine decisive action that bites through the obstacle of lawlessness and restores genuine social order through the clearly defined penalties of genuine law.

The Judgment: Success Through Decisive Action

The Tuan Zhuan (Judgment Commentary) states: “Biting Through has success. It is favorable to let justice be administered.”

Shi He’s judgment is direct and practical: biting through has success. The obstacle between the teeth must be bitten through — the decisive action that removes the obstacle and restores genuine union has success. It is favorable to let justice be administered: the decisive action of Shi He is the administration of genuine justice — the clearly defined penalties that bite through the obstacle of lawlessness and restore genuine social order.

The Open Mouth: The Central Image of Shi He

The central image of Shi He is the open mouth with an obstacle between the teeth — the image of the situation in which genuine union is prevented by an obstacle that must be bitten through. The open mouth represents the genuine potential for union: the two jaws that can close in genuine union when the obstacle between the teeth has been removed. The obstacle between the teeth represents the genuine impediment to union: the lawlessness, the corruption, the genuine wrong that prevents genuine social order.

The decisive action of Shi He is the biting through that removes the obstacle: the genuine justice that bites through the lawlessness, the genuine clarity that illuminates the corruption, the genuine arousing force that breaks through the genuine wrong. When the obstacle has been bitten through, the mouth closes in genuine union — the genuine social order that genuine justice makes possible.

The Natural Sequence: From Guan to Shi He

The Xu Gua Zhuan (Sequence Commentary) states: “Things cannot be united without something to bite through. Hence after Guan comes Shi He.” The natural sequence from Guan (Contemplation) to Shi He (Biting Through) is the I Ching’s account of how genuine decisive action emerges from genuine contemplation: the person who contemplates the genuine state of the situation (Guan) finds the genuine obstacle that genuine decisive action (Shi He) must bite through.

Correspondences and Relationships

  • Paired hexagram (Bi Gua): Hexagram 22 Bi (Grace) — Shi He and Bi are paired: genuine biting through (Shi He) and genuine grace (Bi) are the two faces of the same genuine inner virtue.
  • Inverse hexagram (Zong Gua): Hexagram 22 Bi (Grace) — the inverse of Shi He is Bi: the fire above thunder (Shi He) inverted becomes the mountain above fire (Bi).
  • Nuclear hexagram: Hexagram 39 Jian (Obstruction) — the nuclear hexagram of Shi He is Jian. The genuine biting through of Shi He contains within itself the seeds of the genuine obstruction that false biting through generates.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough —
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting —
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice — it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises — bergamot, frankincense — something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space — and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space — helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing — written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom — to take your understanding further.
