Subduing Arrogant Forces: The Second Pentacle in Ceremonial Magic
Share
One of the most persistent challenges in ceremonial magic — and one that the Key of Solomon addresses with characteristic directness — is the problem of the spirit that oversteps its proper bounds. In Solomonic evocation, the practitioner summons specific spiritual intelligences to assist with specific magical operations, working within a framework of divine authority that establishes the practitioner's right to make such summons and the spirit's obligation to respond appropriately. But spirits, like all intelligences, have their own natures, their own tendencies, and their own potential for inflation — for claiming more presence, more influence, or more authority than the working requires or the practitioner intends.
The Second Pentacle of the Sun is the Solomonic instrument specifically designed to address this problem. Its sacred geometry invokes the Sun's corrective authority — the solar force that subdues inflated pride in spiritual forces and compels them toward rightful order and appropriate humility before the divine authority the practitioner invokes.
Why Spirits Overstep
In the Solomonic understanding, spirits overstep their proper bounds for several reasons: inadequate authority on the part of the practitioner (the spirit does not recognize the practitioner's right to command it), inadequate constraint in the working (the practitioner has not established sufficient boundaries for the spirit's operation), or the spirit's own nature (some spirits are more prone to inflation than others, and working with them requires more robust corrective instruments).
The Second Pentacle addresses all three of these causes simultaneously: it invokes the divine authority of the solar sphere (establishing the practitioner's authority), it encodes the corrective force of solar equilibrium (establishing the constraint), and it specifically targets the quality of inflated pride (addressing the spirit's tendency toward overstepping).
Using the Second Pentacle in Evocation
The Second Pentacle is most effectively used in evocation as a companion to the primary pentacle of the working — the seal that establishes the specific relationship with the spirit being summoned. While the primary pentacle invokes the spirit and establishes the terms of the working, the Second Pentacle of the Sun maintains the corrective authority that keeps the spirit within its proper bounds throughout the operation.
Hold or wear the Second Pentacle during the evocation, particularly during the phases of the working where the spirit's presence is most intense and the risk of overstepping is greatest. State your authority clearly: "By the corrective authority of the Sun and the divine names inscribed within this seal, I compel you to remain within your proper bounds and to serve this working with appropriate humility before the divine authority I invoke."
After the Working
The Second Pentacle is also useful in the dismissal phase of an evocation — the moment when the spirit is formally released from the working and compelled to return to its proper place. A spirit that has been adequately constrained throughout the working will dismiss more cleanly; the Second Pentacle's corrective authority supports this clean dismissal by maintaining the solar equilibrium that rightful order requires.
