The First Pentacle's function is access — the establishment of the practitioner's recognized standing within the Venusian hierarchy. It controls and summons Venus's spirits, establishes the practitioner's authority over the Venusian intelligences, and opens the channel through which the sphere's power can be accessed and directed. Without this access, the practitioner approaches the Venusian sphere from outside; with it, they operate within an established relationship with the sphere's intelligences.
