The Five Sacred Resins: Chemistry, Historical Record, and Oil-Blending Technique for Frankincense, Myrrh, Dragon's Blood, Copal, and Benzoin

Resins occupy a unique position in the materia magica: they are the immune system secretions of trees, produced in response to injury or infection to seal wounds and protect against pathogens. A resin is, at its molecular core, a tree's act of self-defense and self-healing — crystallized and preserved across years or decades into a material of extraordinary chemical complexity and aromatic density.

The five resins that form the foundation of the Western sacred oil tradition each carry a distinct chemical profile, a distinct historical record spanning thousands of years, and a distinct technique for incorporation into anointing oil blends.

1. Frankincense (Boswellia spp.) — Sun / Consecration / Divine Contact

Frankincense is the resin of the Boswellia genus of trees, native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The four primary commercial species — B. sacra (Omani/Yemeni, considered the highest grade), B. carterii (Somali), B. frereana (Somali, non-soluble in alcohol), and B. serrata (Indian) — differ significantly in their boswellic acid profiles and aromatic terpene composition.

Key chemistry: the primary active compounds are boswellic acids (pentacyclic triterpene acids, notably AKBA: 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid) which demonstrate potent anti-inflammatory activity through 5-LOX enzyme inhibition, and incensole acetate (a cembranoid diterpene), documented by Moussaieff et al. (2008) in The FASEB Journal to activate TRPV3 ion channels, producing psychoactive anxiolytic and mood-elevating effects.

Oil-blending technique: Frankincense resin does not dissolve in cold carrier oil directly. Grind the resin tears to a fine powder using a mortar and pestle. Add the powder directly to the carrier oil in your infusion jar. The boswellic acids are lipophilic and will partially extract into the oil over the infusion period; the remaining undissolved resin particles can be strained out at completion. Alternatively, dissolve ground frankincense in a small amount of high-proof food-grade alcohol first, then add the tincture to the carrier oil.

2. Myrrh (Commiphora spp.) — Moon / Death-Regeneration / Ancestral Work

Myrrh is the resin of Commiphora myrrha and related species, native to northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It has been continuously traded and used in sacred contexts for over 4,000 years, appearing in the ancient Egyptian Ebers Papyrus (circa 1550 BCE) as a wound treatment and embalming agent, in the Hebrew Bible as a component of the holy anointing oil formula (Exodus 30:23), and in the ancient Greek medical corpus as a treatment for respiratory conditions.

Key chemistry: myrrh contains terpenoids (primarily sesquiterpenes including curzerene, furanoeudesma, and lindestrene), polysaccharides, and proteins. The characteristic bitter, smoky, slightly medicinal scent comes from the furanoid sesquiterpene fraction. Myrrh demonstrates documented antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing activities consistent with its traditional medical applications.

Oil-blending technique: Myrrh resin is stickier and more difficult to powder than frankincense. Freeze the resin tears for 30 minutes before grinding — cold makes the resin brittle and reduces sticking. Proceed as with frankincense: fine powder into carrier oil for cold infusion, or alcohol tincture addition. Myrrh combines powerfully with frankincense (their traditional pairing across Egyptian, Judaic, and Christian traditions) and with vetiver, patchouli, and cedarwood for deep ancestral and shadow workings.

3. Dragon's Blood (Dracaena / Daemonorops spp.) — Mars / Power Amplification / Activation

Dragon's Blood is the deep red resin produced by several unrelated plant genera that have independently evolved the same blood-red pigmentation — primarily Dracaena draco (Canary Islands), D. cinnabari (Socotra Island), and Daemonorops draco (Southeast Asian rattan palm). The blood-red color is produced by dracorubin and nordracorubin — homoisoflavonoid compounds unique to these genera, representing one of the rarest natural pigment classes in the plant kingdom.

Dragon's Blood has been used as a ritual pigment, a wound-sealing agent, and a power-amplification resin in Mediterranean, North African, and Asian magical traditions. Its Mars-fire association is reinforced by its physical appearance: the resin literally looks like coagulated blood, dark red and opaque.

Oil-blending technique: Dragon's Blood dissolves more readily in oil than frankincense or myrrh. The homoisoflavonoid pigments are lipophilic and will tint the carrier oil a warm amber-red over the infusion period. Add powdered resin directly to the infusion jar. Dragon's Blood is used as an amplifier rather than a base note: add it at 10-15% of the total resin volume to intensify the power and urgency of any oil formula.

4. Copal (Bursera spp.) — Sun / Elevation / Mesoamerican Tradition

Copal is the sacred resin of the Bursera genus, native to Mexico and Central America, and has been the primary sacred incense of Mesoamerican civilizations from the Olmec through the Maya and Aztec to the present day. The word copal derives from the Nahuatl copalli — incense. In Aztec cosmology, copal smoke was understood as the physical manifestation of the deity Tlaloc's breath and as the food of the gods: burning copal was literally feeding the divine.

Archaeological evidence of copal burning in Mesoamerican ritual contexts extends back over 3,000 years. Copal residue has been identified in ceramic braziers at Olmec, Maya, and Aztec sites, and in the cenote (sacred sinkhole) offerings at Chichén Itzá.

Oil-blending technique: White copal (the lightest, most refined grade) dissolves most readily in carrier oil and produces the cleanest, brightest scent profile — fresh, citrusy, slightly resinous. Black copal (darker, more complex) produces a smokier, deeper note. Add powdered copal to the infusion jar; it partially dissolves and partially remains as suspended particles to be strained. Copal pairs beautifully with orange peel, clove, and cinnamon for solar working oils.

5. Benzoin (Styrax benzoin) — Venus / Fixation / Preservation

Benzoin is the resin of Styrax benzoin, a tree native to Sumatra and Java. Its primary chemical components are benzoic acid and benzyl benzoate, with significant concentrations of vanillin — the same compound that gives vanilla its characteristic scent. This vanillin content gives benzoin a warm, sweet, balsamic quality that is simultaneously comforting and fixative.

Benzoin's most important property in oil blending is its function as a fixative: benzyl benzoate and benzoic acid slow the evaporation rate of more volatile aromatic compounds present in the same blend. Adding benzoin to a complex anointing oil formula extends the longevity of the blend's scent on the skin and in the bottle, preventing the most volatile top notes from evaporating before the oil is used.

Oil-blending technique: Benzoin is the easiest of the five resins to incorporate into oil. It dissolves more readily than the other resins and requires less grinding. Add at 5-10% of the total ingredient volume as a fixative in any complex formula. Its Venus association makes it a natural addition to love and beauty working oils; its warm vanilla quality softens and rounds any formula that risks being too sharp or aggressive.

The Way to Deepen Your Practice: 6 Grounded Anchors

When a practice feels restless or distracted, it is rarely a lack of discipline. More often, your nervous system is simply waiting for a physical cue that it is safe to arrive.

Insight remains abstract until it touches your physical world. Reflecting As Above, So Below, a sacred practice begins wherever you set an intentional boundary—draping a woven cloth where noise stops, attuning to an acoustic frequency, or taking up raw materials to forge an implement with your own hands.

You do not need an entire sanctuary built at once. A single deliberate anchor is enough to call you back home to yourself.
