The Third vs. The First Jupiter Pentacle: Command Tools Compared
Share
The Key of Solomon's Jupiter series contains two pentacles with significant commanding functions: the First and the Third. Both invoke Jupiter's authority over spirits. Both are used in ritual contexts involving spirit work. But they operate differently, serve different purposes, and are most effective in different situations. Understanding the distinction helps practitioners choose the right tool and use both effectively.
The First Pentacle of Jupiter: Establishing Authority
The First Pentacle of Jupiter is described in the Key of Solomon as serving to invoke the spirits of Jupiter and to compel them to appear and obey. It is the foundational seal of the Jupiter series — the one that establishes the practitioner's authority within the Jovian sphere and opens the channel through which Jupiter's intelligences can be contacted and worked with.
The First Pentacle's function is primarily preparatory and invocatory. It establishes the practitioner's authority before the working begins, opens the Jovian sphere to contact, and creates the conditions in which Jupiter's spirits can be summoned and will respond. It is the key that opens the door.
The First Pentacle is most effective for:
- Opening a Jupiter working and establishing the practitioner's authority within the Jovian sphere
- Invoking Jupiter's spirits and intelligences to appear
- Preparatory work before more specific Jupiter operations
- Establishing the overall framework of Jovian authority within which other pentacles operate
The Third Pentacle of Jupiter: Active Command and Protection
The Third Pentacle of Jupiter protects the practitioner during spirit work and compels immediate obedience when shown to any spirit that appears. Where the First Pentacle establishes authority and opens the channel, the Third Pentacle operates within an active working — providing protection against the forces that appear and commanding their obedience in real time.
The Third Pentacle's function is active and responsive. It is the tool you use during the working itself, not merely in preparation for it. When a spirit appears and needs to be commanded, when resistance arises and needs to be overcome, when protection is needed in the midst of an active encounter — the Third Pentacle is the tool for these moments.
The Third Pentacle is most effective for:
- Active protection during spirit work as it unfolds
- Compelling immediate obedience from spirits that appear or resist
- Situations where the working involves resistance, testing, or potentially overwhelming forces
- Providing both protection and command simultaneously in a single seal
The Sequential Logic
The First and Third Pentacles suggest a natural sequence in Jupiter spirit work:
- First Pentacle: Open the working. Establish your authority within the Jovian sphere. Invoke Jupiter's spirits to appear.
- Third Pentacle: Protect yourself during the working. Command the spirits that appear. Maintain your authority as the working unfolds.
This sequence uses each pentacle for its specific function: the First for opening and invocation, the Third for protection and active command. Together, they provide a complete framework for effective Jupiter spirit work.
When the Third Pentacle Is Sufficient Alone
For many practitioners, the Third Pentacle alone is sufficient for spirit work. Its commanding function includes the authority to compel spirits to appear as well as to obey — making it a complete tool for both invocation and command in a single seal. The First Pentacle adds a more formal opening of the Jovian sphere, which is valuable for elaborate ceremonial workings but may not be necessary for simpler or more direct spirit contact.
If you are working with a single Jupiter pentacle for spirit work, the Third Pentacle is the more complete choice: it provides both protection and command, and its authority is sufficient for most spirit work contexts.
