The Two Functions of the Third Pentacle: Shield and Instrument of Command

Most magical tools serve a single purpose. The Third Pentacle of Jupiter serves two — simultaneously, in the same working, through the same seal. Understanding both functions and how they work together is essential to using this seal effectively.

Function One: The Shield

The first function of the Third Pentacle is protective. During any ritual involving the summoning or manifestation of spirits, the practitioner is potentially exposed to forces that can destabilize, overwhelm, or deceive. These forces may not be malicious; even benevolent spiritual forces can be overwhelming to a practitioner who is not adequately grounded and protected. And some forces that appear during evocation are actively resistant — they test the practitioner's authority, probe for weaknesses, and attempt to destabilize the working.

The Third Pentacle's protective function addresses this vulnerability directly. Its border verse — "They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth forever" — invokes the quality of immovable stability that the practitioner needs during spirit work. Wearing or holding the seal during a working grounds the practitioner in Jovian authority, creating a stable foundation from which they cannot be dislodged.

This protective function is not merely defensive. It is the foundation of the seal's second function: you can only command effectively from a position of stability. The shield creates the ground from which the instrument of command operates.

Function Two: The Instrument of Command

The second function of the Third Pentacle is active and authoritative. When the seal is shown to any spirit that appears during a working, it compels that spirit's immediate obedience. This is not a request or an invitation; it is a command backed by the authority of the divine governance that the seal invokes.

The mechanism of this command is the seal's design itself — the symbols, divine names, and border inscription that encode Jupiter's authority over the spirits within its sphere. When a spirit sees the Third Pentacle, it recognizes the authority encoded in the seal and is compelled to submit to it. The practitioner does not need to argue, threaten, or negotiate; the seal does the work.

This commanding function is what distinguishes the Third Pentacle from purely protective seals. The Sixth Pentacle protects against all earthly dangers, but it does not command spirits. The Third Pentacle both protects and commands — it is an active instrument of authority, not merely a defensive shield.

How the Two Functions Work Together

The shield and the instrument of command are not separate operations; they are aspects of the same underlying principle. Both flow from the same source: the Jovian authority that the seal invokes.

The shield works because the practitioner is grounded in divine authority — they are as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed. The instrument of command works because the spirits recognize that same divine authority encoded in the seal. The practitioner's stability and the spirits' obedience are both expressions of the same Jovian governance.

In practice, this means that the two functions reinforce each other. The more genuinely grounded the practitioner is in the divine authority the seal invokes, the more effectively both functions operate. A practitioner who approaches their working from a position of genuine trust in divine governance — who is truly as Mount Zion — will find that the spirits they work with respond to the seal's commanding function more readily and more completely.

Using Both Functions Deliberately

Before a working, activate the shield function: hold the seal, speak the border verse, and consciously claim the stability of Mount Zion. Feel yourself grounded in divine authority, immovable, impossible to dislodge.

During the working, use the instrument of command function: when a spirit appears, present the seal clearly — hold it up, speak its authority, and state your command. The seal's design does the work; your role is to present it with genuine authority and clear intention.

After the working, acknowledge both functions: the protection that kept you stable, and the authority that compelled obedience. This acknowledgment closes the working cleanly and maintains the seal's charge for future use.
