Working at the Level of Feeling: How the Fifth Pentacle Differs from Action Magic

Most love magic in the Western tradition works at the level of action or proximity — it draws a person closer, compels them to reach out, creates the conditions in which connection can develop. The Fifth Pentacle of Venus works at a different level entirely: it works at the level of feeling itself, on the inner experience of love and desire that is the heart of any genuine connection. This distinction is fundamental to understanding what the Fifth Pentacle does and when it is the right tool.
Action Magic: Changing What People Do
Action magic changes behavior — it causes people to do things they might not otherwise do, or creates conditions that make certain actions more likely. The Fourth Pentacle of Venus is the clearest example of action magic in the Venus series: it commands Venusian spirits to cause a specific person to come to the practitioner immediately. The result is an action — the person reaches out, returns, closes the distance. The feeling behind that action may or may not change; the action itself is what the magic produces.
Attraction magic is also a form of action magic in a broader sense: it creates conditions that make certain actions — approach, connection, the development of relationship — more likely. The Third Pentacle draws love through attraction, creating the conditions in which the desired person naturally wants to come closer. Again, the result is ultimately behavioral: the person moves toward the practitioner.
Feeling Magic: Changing What People Experience
The Fifth Pentacle works differently. It does not primarily change what the desired person does; it changes what they feel. It excites and inflames love — the inner experience of passion and desire — directly, working on the emotional reality of the connection rather than on the behavioral expression of it.
This distinction matters practically. A person who has been compelled to approach through action magic may approach without feeling the passion that would make the approach meaningful. A person whose feeling has been inflamed through the Fifth Pentacle approaches because they cannot help it — because the passion that has been ignited within them drives them toward the practitioner from the inside rather than being driven from the outside.
The Fifth Pentacle produces genuine feeling — or rather, it excites and inflames the genuine feeling that is already latent, bringing it to the surface and raising it to consuming intensity. The result is not a person who has been compelled to act but a person who is genuinely, overwhelmingly moved by what they feel.
When Feeling Magic Is the Right Choice
Feeling magic is the right choice when:
- The obstacle is emotional, not behavioral. When the desired person is not approaching because they have not yet felt the full force of their feeling — when the feeling is latent but not yet active — the Fifth Pentacle excites that latent feeling directly.
- You want genuine passion, not compelled action. When you want the desired person to feel genuinely, overwhelmingly moved rather than merely compelled to act, the Fifth Pentacle produces the genuine feeling that makes the connection real.
- The connection already exists but needs intensification. When a connection is already present but has cooled or plateaued, the Fifth Pentacle inflames the existing feeling to a new intensity.
- You want to work at the deepest level of the connection. Feeling is more fundamental than action; changing what someone feels changes the connection at its root. The Fifth Pentacle works at this deepest level.
