Alchemy and Astrology: The Planetary Rulers of the Seven Stages
Share
The Celestial Foundation of Alchemy
Alchemy and astrology were, for most of their history, inseparable. The alchemical tradition was built on the Hermetic principle as above, so below — the recognition that the movements and qualities of the celestial bodies are reflected in the processes of the earth and the human psyche. The seven classical planets (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon) were understood to govern not only the movements of the heavens but also the seven metals of alchemy, the seven stages of the alchemical process, and the seven levels of the human psyche.
The Seven Planets and Their Alchemical Correspondences
Saturn → Lead → Calcination
Saturn, the planet of limitation, time, and the confrontation with mortality, governs the first stage of alchemy: Calcination. Lead — the heaviest, densest, most earthbound of the metals — is Saturn's metal. The Saturnine quality of Calcination is the confrontation with the weight of the false self, the burning away of the ego's pretensions in the fire of genuine limitation and loss.
Jupiter → Tin → Dissolution
Jupiter, the planet of expansion, abundance, and the dissolution of boundaries, governs Dissolution. The Jovian quality of Dissolution is the expansive flooding of consciousness with the material of the unconscious — the generous, overwhelming abundance of the inner life that the ego's defenses have been holding back.
Mars → Iron → Separation
Mars, the planet of will, discernment, and the capacity for decisive action, governs Separation. The Martian quality of Separation is the sharp, clear cutting of the authentic from the inauthentic — the warrior's capacity to distinguish what is real from what is false and to act on that distinction.
Sun → Gold → Conjunction
The Sun, the center of the solar system and the symbol of the essential self, governs Conjunction. Gold — the most perfect of metals, incorruptible and radiant — is the Sun's metal. The solar quality of Conjunction is the integration of opposites in the light of the essential self — the sacred marriage that the Sun's light makes possible.
Venus → Copper → Fermentation
Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and the catalytic power of genuine attraction, governs Fermentation. The Venusian quality of Fermentation is the arrival of grace — the catalytic agent of genuine transformation that arrives, like love, unbidden and transformative.
Mercury → Quicksilver → Distillation
Mercury, the planet of communication, intelligence, and the capacity to move between worlds, governs Distillation. Quicksilver — the only metal that is liquid at room temperature, capable of taking any form — is Mercury's metal. The Mercurial quality of Distillation is the fluid, adaptive intelligence that refines the self through sustained engagement with the full range of experience.
Moon → Silver → Coagulation
The Moon, the planet of reflection, receptivity, and the crystallization of the inner life into outer form, governs Coagulation. Silver — reflective, luminous, and associated with the feminine principle — is the Moon's metal. The lunar quality of Coagulation is the receptive crystallization of the transformed self into its permanent new form.
Using Astrology to Support the Alchemical Work
Astrological timing can support the alchemical work: Saturn transits often initiate Calcination; Jupiter transits often bring Dissolution; Mars transits support the Separation work; Venus transits can catalyze Fermentation. Understanding the planetary influences active in your life can help you recognize which alchemical stage you are in and what support is available.
