Aries Somatic Healing: Releasing Trauma from the Body

BY NICOLE LAU

Your body remembers what your mind tries to forget. For Aries, trauma doesn't just live in your thoughtsβ€”it lives in your jaw, your shoulders, your fists, your head. Every time you were told to suppress your anger, every time you had to fight alone, every time you couldn't express your rageβ€”your body stored it. And now, years later, that stored energy is creating chronic tension, headaches, TMJ, and a nervous system that won't turn off.

This is somatic healingβ€”the practice of releasing trauma directly from the body. Because talking about it isn't enough. You have to move it, shake it, discharge it from your muscles, your fascia, your nervous system. And for Aries, that means learning to release the fight energy that's been stuck in your body since childhood.

Where Aries Holds Trauma in the Body

Aries rules the head, face, jaw, and upper body. This is where your trauma lives:

1. The Jaw (TMJ, Teeth Grinding)

What's stored: Suppressed anger, words you couldn't say, rage you had to swallow.

Why it's there: When you can't express anger verbally or physically, it gets locked in the jaw. You clench, you grind, you hold.

Symptoms: TMJ, teeth grinding, jaw pain, headaches, difficulty opening mouth fully.

2. The Shoulders and Neck

What's stored: The weight of having to fight alone, chronic hypervigilance, always being "on guard."

Why it's there: Your shoulders are perpetually braced for attack. Your neck is constantly scanning for threats.

Symptoms: Chronic shoulder tension, neck pain, upper back knots, tension headaches.

3. The Fists and Arms

What's stored: Incomplete fight responseβ€”the punch you never threw, the boundary you couldn't enforce.

Why it's there: Your body prepared to fight but wasn't allowed to complete the action.

Symptoms: Chronic fist clenching, forearm tension, carpal tunnel, hand pain.

4. The Head (Migraines, Headaches)

What's stored: Chronic hypervigilance, overthinking as a defense mechanism, mental hyperarousal.

Why it's there: Your nervous system is stuck in fight mode, creating chronic tension in the head.

Symptoms: Migraines, tension headaches, pressure behind eyes, scalp tension.

The Science: Why Somatic Healing Works for Aries

Bessel van der Kolk's research in The Body Keeps the Score shows that trauma is stored in the body, not just the mind. For Aries, this means:

  • Your fight response was activated but never completed
  • The energy is still stuck in your muscles
  • Your nervous system is chronically activated
  • Talking about it won't release itβ€”you have to move it

Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing teaches that trauma is incomplete survival energy. For Aries, that's incomplete fight energy. Healing requires completing the action your body wanted to take but couldn't.

Somatic Practice 1: Jaw Release (Releasing Suppressed Anger)

What it does: Releases stored anger and unexpressed words from the jaw.

How to do it:

  1. Sit comfortably. Place your fingertips on your jaw joints (just in front of your ears).
  2. Gently massage in small circles while slowly opening and closing your mouth.
  3. Make a "lion's breath"β€”open your mouth wide, stick out your tongue, exhale forcefully with a "haaa" sound.
  4. Repeat 5 times. Notice the release.
  5. Then, speak out loud the words you couldn't say: "I'm angry." "No." "Stop." Let your jaw move freely.

When to use it: When you feel jaw tension, before bed (if you grind teeth), or when you're suppressing anger.

Somatic Practice 2: Shoulder Shaking (Releasing Hypervigilance)

What it does: Discharges chronic tension and hypervigilance from shoulders and upper back.

How to do it:

  1. Stand with feet hip-width apart.
  2. Lift your shoulders up to your ears, hold for 5 seconds.
  3. Drop them suddenly with a loud exhale ("haaa").
  4. Repeat 10 times.
  5. Then shake your shoulders vigorously for 30 secondsβ€”let them move freely, chaotically.
  6. Stop. Notice the tingling, the warmth. This is energy moving.

When to use it: When you feel "on guard," after stressful situations, or when shoulders feel tight.

Somatic Practice 3: Punching Release (Completing the Fight Response)

What it does: Completes the incomplete fight response stored in your arms and fists.

How to do it:

  1. Get a punching bag, pillow, or mattress.
  2. Stand in a stable stance. Make fists.
  3. Punch with full force while making sound ("No!" "Stop!" "Get away!").
  4. Punch for 1-2 minutes until you feel the energy discharge.
  5. Then stop. Shake out your arms. Notice how your body feels.

When to use it: When you feel rage, when you feel powerless, or when you need to release fight energy.

Somatic Practice 4: Head and Scalp Massage (Releasing Mental Hyperarousal)

What it does: Releases tension from chronic hypervigilance and overthinking.

How to do it:

  1. Use your fingertips to massage your entire scalp in small circles.
  2. Pay special attention to temples, base of skull, and crown of head.
  3. Massage for 5 minutes while breathing slowly.
  4. Then place your palms over your eyes (no pressure). Rest for 1 minute.
  5. Notice the softening, the quieting of your mind.

When to use it: When you have a headache, when your mind won't stop, or before sleep.

Somatic Practice 5: Grounding Through Feet (Returning to Safety)

What it does: Brings you out of fight mode and into present-moment safety.

How to do it:

  1. Stand barefoot. Feel your feet on the ground.
  2. Stomp your feet 10 times, forcefully.
  3. Then stand still. Notice the vibration, the connection to earth.
  4. Say out loud: "I'm here. I'm safe. The fight is over."
  5. Take 3 deep breaths, feeling your feet with each exhale.

When to use it: When you feel activated, when you can't calm down, or after releasing fight energy.

Daily Somatic Routine for Aries

Morning (5 minutes):

  • Shoulder shaking (1 minute)
  • Jaw release (2 minutes)
  • Grounding through feet (2 minutes)

When Activated (as needed):

  • Punching release (until energy discharges)
  • Grounding through feet (to return to safety)

Evening (5 minutes):

  • Head and scalp massage (3 minutes)
  • Jaw release (2 minutes)

Advanced Practice: Somatic Experiencing Session

For deeper healing, work with a Somatic Experiencing practitioner who can help you:

  • Track sensations in your body
  • Complete incomplete fight responses
  • Discharge stored survival energy
  • Regulate your nervous system

This is especially important if you have chronic pain, migraines, or TMJ that won't resolve with self-practice.

What to Expect: The Healing Process

Week 1-2: You might feel more activated at first. This is normalβ€”you're waking up stored energy.

Week 3-4: You'll notice less jaw clenching, fewer headaches, shoulders dropping.

Month 2-3: Chronic tension starts to release. You can relax without feeling vulnerable.

Month 6+: Your nervous system learns a new baseline. You can be strong without being tense.

The Gift of Somatic Healing: The Regulated Warrior

When Aries releases trauma from the body, you don't lose your fireβ€”you reclaim it. The fight energy that was stuck becomes healthy assertion. The jaw tension becomes clear communication. The shoulder armor becomes strength that can also soften.

You become a warrior who knows when to fight and when to rest. Who can be fierce and relaxed. Who can finally put down the armor and breathe.

Your body has been holding this for you. Now it's time to let it go.

Ready to explore the deeper patterns beneath the body's armor? Jung and the Shadow: The Mystical Path to Psychic Integrationβ€”essential reading for Aries learning to integrate the warrior and release what the body has been holding. For those walking this path, the Sacred Space Cleanse helps clear the energetic residue that accumulates during deep release work, while the Emotional Filter Ritual Kit provides a structured way to process and filter the emotions that surface as the body lets go. And for continuing the journey of integration, Jung and the Archetype offers a profound map for understanding the archetypal forces that shape our deepest patterns.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
