Capricorn Somatic Healing: Releasing Trauma from the Body

BY NICOLE LAU
Your body remembers what your mind tries to forget. For Capricorn, trauma doesn't just live in your thoughtsβit lives in your knees, your bones, your spine, your teeth, your skin. Every time you had to be the adult when you were still a child, every time you couldn't show weakness, every time you had to carry everything aloneβyour body stored it. And now, years later, that stored energy is creating knee pain, bone issues, chronic stiffness, and a nervous system that won't soften.
This is somatic healingβthe practice of releasing trauma directly from the body. Because talking about it isn't enough. You have to soften it, release it, let it go from your muscles, your fascia, your nervous system. And for Capricorn, that means learning that vulnerability is safe, and that your body doesn't have to be armor.
Where Capricorn Holds Trauma in the Body
Capricorn rules the knees, bones, spine, teeth, and skin. This is where your trauma lives:
1. The Knees
What's stored: Fear of vulnerability, inability to bend, terror of being weak.
Why it's there: Your knees won't bendβyou can't kneel, can't surrender, can't be soft.
Symptoms: Chronic knee pain, difficulty kneeling, stiff knees, pain when bending.
2. The Spine
What's stored: The weight of responsibility, holding yourself upright when you want to collapse.
Why it's there: Your spine holds the burden of being the adult, of never being allowed to rest.
Symptoms: Chronic back pain, spine stiffness, difficulty relaxing posture, scoliosis.
3. The Bones and Joints
What's stored: Rigidity, fear of change, chronic holding pattern.
Why it's there: Your bones are your structureβwhen you can't be flexible, they become brittle.
Symptoms: Bone issues, arthritis, joint pain, osteoporosis, chronic stiffness.
4. The Teeth and Jaw
What's stored: Suppressed needs, words you couldn't say, chronic self-control.
Why it's there: You clench your jaw to hold everything in, to stay strong.
Symptoms: TMJ, teeth grinding, jaw pain, dental issues.
The Science: Why Somatic Healing Works for Capricorn
Bessel van der Kolk's research in The Body Keeps the Score shows that trauma is stored in the body, not just the mind. For Capricorn, this means:
- Your bones and spine hold the weight of premature adulthood
- Your knees won't bend because vulnerability feels like death
- Your nervous system is chronically braced
- Talking about it won't release itβyou have to soften, bend, let go
Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing teaches that healing requires teaching the body that it's safe to be vulnerable. For Capricorn, that's learning that softness isn't weakness.
Somatic Practice 1: Knee Softening (Learning to Bend)
What it does: Teaches your kneesβand your nervous systemβthat it's safe to bend, to surrender.
How to do it:
- Stand with feet hip-width apart.
- Slowly bend your knees, lowering into a gentle squat.
- Notice the resistance, the fear. Stay with it.
- Say: "I can bend. I can be vulnerable. I can kneel."
- Hold for 30 seconds, then rise slowly.
- Repeat 10 times, softening more each time.
- Notice that bending doesn't break you.
When to use it: Daily, to practice vulnerability, or when knees are stiff.
Somatic Practice 2: Spine Release (Letting Go of the Burden)
What it does: Releases the chronic tension of holding yourself upright and carrying everything.
How to do it:
- Stand with feet hip-width apart.
- Slowly roll down, vertebra by vertebra, letting your spine curve.
- Hang forward, letting your head and arms dangle.
- Stay for 2-3 minutes, breathing into your back.
- Say: "I can let go. I don't have to hold myself up. I can rest."
- Slowly roll back up, one vertebra at a time.
- Notice the softening, the permission to collapse.
When to use it: When your back is tense, when you've been holding everything, or daily to release.
Somatic Practice 3: Lying Down Practice (Permission to Be Weak)
What it does: Teaches your nervous system that it's safe to be horizontal, to not be strong.
How to do it:
- Lie down on your back, arms at your sides, palms up.
- Do absolutely nothing for 15 minutes. No phone, no thinking, no achieving.
- Just breathe and be weak.
- When the urge to get up and be productive arises, notice it and stay.
- Say: "I can be weak. I can rest. I don't have to be strong right now."
- Notice the discomfort, the guilt. Stay with it.
- This is reparentingβgiving yourself the rest you never got.
When to use it: Daily, to teach your nervous system that rest is safe.
Somatic Practice 4: Jaw Release (Releasing Suppressed Needs)
What it does: Releases suppressed needs and chronic self-control from the jaw.
How to do it:
- Sit comfortably. Place your fingertips on your jaw joints.
- Gently massage in small circles while opening and closing your mouth.
- Make a "lion's breath"βopen mouth wide, stick out tongue, exhale forcefully.
- Repeat 5 times.
- Then speak out loud: "I need help." "I can't do this alone." "I'm tired."
- Let your jaw move freely, let the words come.
When to use it: When jaw is tense, when you're suppressing needs, or daily to release.
Somatic Practice 5: Self-Holding (Receiving Care)
What it does: Teaches you to receive care, even if it's from yourself.
How to do it:
- Sit or lie down. Wrap your arms around yourself in a hug.
- Rock gently side to side.
- Say: "I'm holding you. You don't have to be strong. I've got you."
- Do this for 5-10 minutes.
- Let yourself be held, even by yourself.
- Notice the softening, the permission to be cared for.
When to use it: When you feel alone, when you've been strong for too long, or daily for self-care.
Daily Somatic Routine for Capricorn
Morning (10 minutes):
- Knee softening (5 minutes)
- Spine release (5 minutes)
When Overwhelmed (as needed):
- Lying down practice (to rest)
- Self-holding (to receive care)

Advanced Practice: Somatic Experiencing Session
For deeper healing, work with a Somatic Experiencing practitioner who can help you:
- Release the armor from the body
- Teach your nervous system that vulnerability is safe
- Build capacity to receive care
- Soften chronic rigidity
This is especially important if you have chronic bone/joint issues, back pain, or inability to rest that won't resolve with self-practice.
What to Expect: The Healing Process
Week 1-2: You might feel uncomfortable being vulnerable. This is normalβyou're learning that softness is safe.
Week 3-4: You'll notice less knee pain, softer spine, easier resting.
Month 2-3: Chronic stiffness starts to release. You can be vulnerable without feeling weak.
Month 6+: Your nervous system learns a new baseline. You can be soft and still be safe.
The Gift of Somatic Healing: The Soft Capricorn
When Capricorn releases trauma from the body, you don't lose your strengthβyou expand it. The rigidity that was stuck becomes the ability to be flexible. The armor becomes strength that can also soften. The chronic holding becomes the freedom to rest.
You become strong and soft, capable and vulnerable, responsible and rested. You can finally bend without breaking.
Your body has been holding this for you. Now it's time to let it go.
