How to Read Runes for Divination
Rune reading is an ancient Norse divination practice that reveals guidance, insight, and wisdom. Unlike tarot, runes are direct, earthy, and action-oriented. This is your complete guide to reading runes for divination.
What is Rune Divination?
Ancient Practice
Rune casting was practiced by:
- Norse and Germanic peoples
- VΓΆlvas (Norse seers/shamans)
- Warriors seeking guidance before battle
- Communities making important decisions
How It Works
Rune divination:
- Taps into wyrd (Norse concept of fate/destiny)
- Reveals patterns and possibilities
- Provides direct, actionable guidance
- Connects you to Norse wisdom
Preparing for a Reading
Create Sacred Space
- Display your Elder Futhark Tapestry
- Light your Norse Rune Magic Candle
- Clear the space (smoke cleansing, sound, etc.)
- Set intention for clarity
Prepare Yourself
- Ground and center
- Clear your mind
- Connect with Norse gods/ancestors (if you work with them)
- State your question clearly
Prepare Your Runes
- Keep runes in a special bag or box
- Hold them, connecting with their energy
- Shake or mix them while focusing on question
- Trust the process
Basic Rune Reading Methods
Method 1: Single Rune Draw (Daily Guidance)
Best for: Daily guidance, simple yes/no, quick insight
How to Do It:
- Focus on your question or "What do I need to know today?"
- Draw one rune from bag (without looking)
- Place it before you
- Interpret its meaning in context of your question
- Journal in your Elder Futhark Runes Journal
Example:
Question: "What energy should I focus on today?"
Rune drawn: Ansuz (α¨)
Interpretation: Focus on communication, listen for divine messages, wisdom is coming
Method 2: Three Rune Spread (Past-Present-Future)
Best for: Understanding situation, seeing trajectory, general guidance
How to Do It:
- Focus on your question
- Draw three runes
- Lay them out left to right
- Read as: Past - Present - Future
Positions:
- Rune 1 (Past): What led to this situation
- Rune 2 (Present): Current energy/situation
- Rune 3 (Future): Likely outcome/what's coming
Example Reading:
Question: "What's happening with my career?"
- Past: Nauthiz (αΎ) - Constraint, delays
- Present: Kenaz (α²) - Illumination, breakthrough
- Future: Fehu (α ) - Abundance, success
Interpretation: You've been through delays and constraints, but now clarity is coming, leading to financial success
Method 3: Five Rune Cross (Detailed Insight)
Best for: Complex situations, deep understanding, major decisions
Layout:
2
1 5 3
4
Positions:
- Rune 1 (Left): Past influences
- Rune 2 (Top): Challenges/obstacles
- Rune 3 (Right): Helpful influences
- Rune 4 (Bottom): Foundation/underlying factors
- Rune 5 (Center): Outcome/synthesis
Method 4: Rune Casting (Traditional)
Best for: Open-ended questions, complex situations, traditional practice
How to Do It:
- Use cloth or your tapestry as casting surface
- Hold all runes in hands
- Focus on question
- Gently toss runes onto surface
- Read runes that land face-up
- Closer to center = more important
- Position relative to each other matters
Interpretation Tips:
- Runes touching = connected energies
- Runes far apart = separate influences
- Center runes = most significant
- Edge runes = peripheral influences
Reading Reversed Runes
What Are Reversed Runes?
When a rune appears upside-down:
- Some practitioners read them as having opposite/blocked meaning
- Others don't use reversals
- Choose what feels right for you
Reversed Meanings (If You Use Them)
- Upright: Energy flowing freely
- Reversed: Energy blocked, delayed, or internalized
Example:
- Fehu upright: Wealth coming
- Fehu reversed: Financial loss or blocked abundance
Note on Symmetrical Runes
Some runes can't be reversed (look same upside-down):
- Gebo, Hagalaz, Isa, Jera, Ingwaz, Dagaz, Sowilo (in some fonts)
- These are always read upright
Interpreting Your Reading
Step 1: Note First Impressions
- What's your immediate feeling?
- What jumps out at you?
- Trust your intuition first
Step 2: Consider Individual Runes
- What does each rune mean?
- Look up meanings if needed
- But don't rely only on book definitions
Step 3: See the Story
- How do runes relate to each other?
- What narrative emerges?
- What's the overall message?
Step 4: Apply to Your Question
- How does this answer your question?
- What action is suggested?
- What do you need to know?
Step 5: Journal
In your Elder Futhark Runes Journal:
- Date and question
- Runes drawn and positions
- Your interpretation
- How it manifested (review later)
Sample Readings
Love Question
Question: "What's the energy around my relationship?"
Three Rune Spread:
- Past: Gebo (α·) - Partnership, balance
- Present: Thurisaz (α¦) - Conflict, challenge
- Future: Wunjo (αΉ) - Joy, harmony
Interpretation: Relationship was balanced, currently facing challenges, but will return to harmony if you work through it
Career Question
Question: "Should I take this new job?"
Single Rune: Raidho (α±) - Journey, movement
Interpretation: Yes, this is part of your path. Movement and progress indicated.
General Guidance
Question: "What do I need to know right now?"
Single Rune: Isa (α) - Ice, stillness
Interpretation: Pause. Don't force anything. Time for reflection and waiting.
Common Reading Mistakes
Mistake 1: Ignoring Intuition
- Book meanings are guides, not rules
- Your intuition is most important
- Runes speak through you
Mistake 2: Being Too Literal
- Runes are symbolic
- Consider metaphorical meanings
- Context matters
Mistake 3: Reading When Emotional
- Strong emotions cloud readings
- Ground and center first
- Or ask someone else to read for you
