Leo Somatic Healing: Releasing Trauma from the Body

BY NICOLE LAU

Your body remembers what your mind tries to forget. For Leo, trauma doesn't just live in your thoughtsβ€”it lives in your heart, your spine, your solar plexus, your upper back. Every time you had to perform when you were exhausted, every time you couldn't show weakness, every time you had to be spectacular when you just wanted to restβ€”your body stored it. And now, years later, that stored energy is creating heart palpitations, back pain, solar plexus tension, and a nervous system that won't turn off.

This is somatic healingβ€”the practice of releasing trauma directly from the body. Because talking about it isn't enough. You have to soften it, release it, let it go from your muscles, your fascia, your nervous system. And for Leo, that means learning to rest without feeling like you're failing, and to be ordinary without feeling like you're disappearing.

Where Leo Holds Trauma in the Body

Leo rules the heart, spine, upper back, and solar plexus. This is where your trauma lives:

1. The Heart and Chest

What's stored: Performance anxiety, fear of not being enough, love you gave but never received unconditionally.

Why it's there: Your heart holds the terror of being ordinary, the exhaustion of always performing.

Symptoms: Heart palpitations, chest tightness, anxiety in the chest, difficulty breathing deeply.

2. The Spine (Especially Upper Back)

What's stored: The weight of always having to be strong, holding yourself upright when you want to collapse.

Why it's there: Your spine holds the performanceβ€”you can't let yourself slouch, can't let yourself be weak.

Symptoms: Upper back pain, spine tension, difficulty relaxing posture, chronic stiffness.

3. The Solar Plexus

What's stored: Shame about not being special enough, fear of being seen as ordinary, validation addiction.

Why it's there: Your solar plexus is your power centerβ€”when your worth is conditional, it becomes tense.

Symptoms: Solar plexus tension, digestive issues, anxiety in the belly, difficulty breathing into the diaphragm.

4. The Shoulders

What's stored: The burden of always being "on," the weight of the crown you can't put down.

Why it's there: Your shoulders hold the performanceβ€”always up, always ready, always impressive.

Symptoms: Chronic shoulder tension, upper back knots, difficulty relaxing shoulders.

The Science: Why Somatic Healing Works for Leo

Bessel van der Kolk's research in The Body Keeps the Score shows that trauma is stored in the body, not just the mind. For Leo, this means:

  • Your body is chronically braced for performance
  • Your heart and spine hold the terror of being ordinary
  • Your nervous system can't rest because rest feels like failure
  • Talking about it won't release itβ€”you have to soften, rest, let go

Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing teaches that healing requires teaching the body that it's safe to rest. For Leo, that's learning that you exist even when you're not performing.

Somatic Practice 1: Heart Softening (Releasing Performance Anxiety)

What it does: Softens the heart and releases the terror of not being enough.

How to do it:

  1. Sit or lie down. Place both hands on your heart.
  2. Breathe into your heart space, feeling it expand.
  3. As you exhale, let your heart soften, let your chest relax.
  4. Say: "I'm enough, right now, without doing anything. I'm lovable when I'm ordinary."
  5. Do this for 10 minutes, softening with each breath.
  6. Notice the release, the permission to just be.

When to use it: When you feel performance anxiety, when your chest is tight, or daily to practice being ordinary.

Somatic Practice 2: Spine Release (Letting Go of the Performance)

What it does: Releases the chronic tension of holding yourself upright and performing strength.

How to do it:

  1. Stand with feet hip-width apart. Let your arms hang.
  2. Slowly roll down, vertebra by vertebra, letting your spine curve.
  3. Hang forward, letting your head and arms dangle.
  4. Stay here for 1-2 minutes, breathing into your back.
  5. Say: "I can let go. I don't have to hold myself up. I can rest."
  6. Slowly roll back up, one vertebra at a time.
  7. Notice the softening, the release of performance.

When to use it: When your back is tense, when you've been performing, or daily to release.

3. Solar Plexus Breathing (Releasing Shame)

What it does: Releases shame and validation addiction from the power center.

How to do it:

  1. Sit comfortably. Place your hand on your solar plexus (below ribs, above belly button).
  2. Breathe deeply into your solar plexus, feeling it expand.
  3. As you exhale, imagine releasing the shame, the need for validation.
  4. Say: "My worth is inherent. I don't have to earn it. I'm valuable simply by existing."
  5. Do this for 5-10 minutes.
  6. Notice the softening, the release of the need to prove yourself.

When to use it: When you feel shame, when you need validation, or daily to build inner worth.

Somatic Practice 4: Shoulder Drops (Putting Down the Crown)

What it does: Releases the burden of always being "on" and impressive.

How to do it:

  1. Stand or sit. Lift your shoulders up to your ears.
  2. Hold for 5 seconds, squeezing tight.
  3. Drop them suddenly with a loud exhale ("haaa").
  4. Repeat 10 times.
  5. Then let your shoulders be completely relaxed, even slouched.
  6. Say: "I can put down the crown. I can be ordinary. I can rest."
  7. Notice the permission to not be impressive.

When to use it: When shoulders are tense, after performing, or daily to practice ordinariness.

Somatic Practice 5: Lying Down Practice (Permission to Rest)

What it does: Teaches your nervous system that rest is safe, that you exist even when you're not achieving.

How to do it:

  1. Lie down on your back, arms at your sides, palms up.
  2. Do absolutely nothing for 10 minutes. No phone, no thinking, no achieving.
  3. Just breathe and exist.
  4. When the urge to get up and do something arises, notice it and stay.
  5. Say: "I exist even when I'm resting. I'm valuable even when I'm doing nothing."
  6. Notice the discomfort, the resistance. Stay with it.

When to use it: Daily, to teach your nervous system that rest is safe.

Daily Somatic Routine for Leo

Morning (10 minutes):

  • Heart softening (5 minutes)
  • Solar plexus breathing (5 minutes)

After Performing (as needed):

  • Spine release (to let go of performance)
  • Shoulder drops (to put down the crown)

Evening (15 minutes):

  • Lying down practice (10 minutes)

Advanced Practice: Somatic Experiencing Session

For deeper healing, work with a Somatic Experiencing practitioner who can help you:

  • Release performance anxiety from the body
  • Teach your nervous system that rest is safe
  • Build inner worth that doesn't require external validation
  • Regulate the nervous system

This is especially important if you have chronic heart issues, back pain, or performance anxiety that won't resolve with self-practice.

What to Expect: The Healing Process

Week 1-2: You might feel uncomfortable resting. This is normalβ€”you're learning that you exist without performing.

Week 3-4: You'll notice less chest tightness, softer shoulders, easier breathing.

Month 2-3: Chronic tension starts to release. You can rest without feeling like you're failing.

Month 6+: Your nervous system learns a new baseline. You can be ordinary and still feel valuable.

The Gift of Somatic Healing: The Resting Lion

When Leo releases trauma from the body, you don't lose your radianceβ€”you reclaim it. The performance anxiety that was stuck becomes authentic self-expression. The heart tension becomes an open heart that doesn't need validation. The spine rigidity becomes strength that can also soften.

You become a lion who can shine and rest, who can be spectacular and ordinary, who can finally put down the crown and just be.

Your body has been holding this for you. Now it's time to let it go.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
