Sowilo Rune: Complete Guide to Meaning & Magic

BY NICOLE LAU

Introduction to Sowilo (ᛋ)

Sowilo is the sixteenth rune of the Elder Futhark alphabet and the eighth and final symbol of Heimdall's Aett. Where the previous runes dealt with transformation, mystery, and protection, Sowilo brings the sun—victory, success, wholeness, and the divine self realized. This is the rune of the sun, lightning, triumph, and enlightenment. Sowilo represents the culmination of Heimdall's Aett's journey, the light that banishes darkness, success after struggle, and the understanding that you ARE the sun—radiant, powerful, victorious. It teaches us that victory is certain, that light always overcomes darkness, and that your true self shines like the sun.

Rune Shape & Symbolism

The Sowilo rune (ᛋ) resembles a lightning bolt or the sun's rays. It can be seen as:

• A lightning bolt (divine power striking)
• The sun's rays radiating outward
• The letter S for sun (sol)
• A flash of enlightenment
• Victory's lightning strike

Pronunciation: "SO-wee-lo" or "SOH-wee-lo"

Literal Meaning: Sun, victory, success, wholeness

Alternative Names: Sigel, Sowelu, Sol

The Sacred Sun

The sun held profound significance in Norse culture:

• Life-Giver: Without sun, no life—crops fail, darkness reigns
• Victory: Sun conquers darkness daily
• Divine: Personified as goddess Sól
• Cyclical: Sun's journey through seasons
• Power: Ultimate source of energy and light

Sowilo embodies the sun's victorious, life-giving power.

Divinatory Meanings

Upright Position

When Sowilo appears upright in a reading, it signals:

• Victory: Success, triumph, winning
• Success: Achievement, accomplishment, goals met
• Wholeness: Integration, completion, unity
• Power: Personal power, strength, confidence
• Enlightenment: Spiritual awakening, clarity, truth
• Health: Vitality, energy, life force
• The Self: Your true nature, divine self, radiance
• Certainty: Assured success, inevitable victory

Note on Reversal

Sowilo cannot be reversed—it looks the same upside down. This is symbolically significant: the sun is the sun, victory is victory, success is success. There is no "reversed" triumph.

However, Sowilo can appear blocked or delayed in context, suggesting:

• Victory delayed (but still coming)
• Success requiring more effort
• Light temporarily obscured (but sun still shines)
• Power not yet fully realized
