Sowilo Rune Divination: Reading Solar Power, Victory & Success in Spreads

When Sowilo (ᛊ) appears in a rune reading, the sun is speaking. The sixteenth rune of the Elder Futhark — the rune of solar power, of victory, of the radiant energy that drives away darkness and fills everything it touches with life and success — is one of the most unambiguously positive runes in the system. Sowilo in a reading almost always carries good news: the sun is rising, the darkness is retreating, victory is approaching. The question is always: are you ready to receive the solar power that is available to you?
Sowilo Upright: Core Divination Meanings
Victory and success: Sowilo upright is the clearest indicator of victory in the Elder Futhark. It signals that success is coming — that the solar power is aligned with your intention, that the darkness is being overcome, that you are moving toward a successful outcome with the full power of the sun behind you.
Solar power and vitality: Sowilo upright indicates a surge of solar energy — of vitality, confidence, and the unstoppable life force that the sun represents. This is an excellent time for any activity that requires energy, confidence, and the full expression of your power.
Clarity and illumination: The sun illuminates everything it touches. Sowilo upright indicates that clarity is coming — that what was obscure is becoming visible, that the path forward is being illuminated, that confusion is giving way to clear understanding.
Health and healing: Sowilo upright is one of the most positive indicators for health and healing in the Elder Futhark. It signals that the healing power of solar energy is active — that illness, depression, or depletion is being overcome by the vitality of the sun.
Confidence and self-expression: Sowilo upright indicates a period of heightened confidence and authentic self-expression — when you are most fully yourself, most radiant, most able to shine your light into the world without apology or diminishment.
Divine guidance and alignment: The sun was understood in Norse cosmology as a divine force — the goddess Sol driving her chariot across the sky. Sowilo upright can indicate divine guidance and alignment — that you are moving in the direction that the divine intelligence of the cosmos is supporting.
Sowilo Reversed (Merkstave): Shadow Meanings
Defeat and failure: Sowilo reversed most directly indicates that the solar power is not aligned with your current intention — that the victory you are seeking is not coming in the form or at the time you expect. This is not a permanent condition; the sun always rises again.
False confidence and hubris: The shadow of Sowilo's radiant confidence is hubris — the overconfidence that comes from identifying too completely with the solar power, from believing you are invincible. Sowilo reversed can warn of overreach, of taking on more than the situation can support.
Burnout and depletion: The sun that has burned too hot — Sowilo reversed can indicate burnout, the depletion that comes from giving out more solar energy than can be replenished. Rest and restoration are needed before the solar power can be fully active again.
Blocked vitality: Sowilo reversed can indicate that your natural vitality and solar power are being blocked — by depression, illness, circumstances, or your own self-limiting beliefs. Something is preventing the sun from shining at its full power.
Destructive solar energy: The sun that burns rather than warms — Sowilo reversed can indicate that solar energy is being expressed in a destructive rather than a generative way: aggression, domination, the burning that destroys rather than the warmth that nourishes.
