Taurus Somatic Healing: Releasing Trauma from the Body

BY NICOLE LAU

Your body remembers what your mind tries to forget. For Taurus, trauma doesn't just live in your thoughtsβ€”it lives in your throat, your neck, your jaw, your lower back, your gut. Every time you couldn't speak your truth, every time the ground crumbled beneath you, every time you had to hold everything togetherβ€”your body stored it. And now, years later, that stored energy is creating chronic tension, digestive issues, throat problems, and a nervous system that can't feel safe.

This is somatic healingβ€”the practice of releasing trauma directly from the body. Because talking about it isn't enough. You have to ground it, release it, discharge it from your muscles, your fascia, your nervous system. And for Taurus, that means learning to release the freeze energy and teach your body that it's safe to feel again.

Where Taurus Holds Trauma in the Body

Taurus rules the throat, neck, jaw, shoulders, and lower back. This is where your trauma lives:

1. The Throat (Thyroid, Voice)

What's stored: Unspoken words, suppressed needs, truth you couldn't express.

Why it's there: When you can't speak your truth or ask for what you need, it gets stuck in the throat.

Symptoms: Chronic sore throat, thyroid issues, difficulty swallowing, lump in throat, voice problems.

2. The Neck and Jaw

What's stored: Stubbornness as protection, holding on too tight, fear of change.

Why it's there: Your neck and jaw are braced against loss, holding everything in place.

Symptoms: Chronic neck pain, TMJ, jaw clenching, stiff neck, difficulty turning head.

3. The Lower Back

What's stored: Financial stress, fear of instability, carrying too much weight.

Why it's there: Your lower back holds the burden of survival anxiety and material insecurity.

Symptoms: Chronic lower back pain, sciatica, hip tension, difficulty standing upright.

4. The Gut (Digestive System)

What's stored: Anxiety about security, inability to "digest" change, frozen emotions.

Why it's there: Your gut is your second brainβ€”when you can't process emotions, your digestion suffers.

Symptoms: IBS, constipation, bloating, digestive issues, food sensitivities.

The Science: Why Somatic Healing Works for Taurus

Bessel van der Kolk's research in The Body Keeps the Score shows that trauma is stored in the body, not just the mind. For Taurus, this means:

  • Your freeze response created immobilization in the body
  • The energy is stuck, creating heaviness and numbness
  • Your nervous system is in shutdown mode
  • Talking about it won't release itβ€”you have to gently mobilize it

Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing teaches that trauma is incomplete mobilization. For Taurus, that's frozen energy that needs gentle awakening.

Somatic Practice 1: Throat Release (Reclaiming Your Voice)

What it does: Releases suppressed words and unspoken truth from the throat.

How to do it:

  1. Sit comfortably. Place your hand gently on your throat.
  2. Hum softly, feeling the vibration in your throat.
  3. Gradually make the hum louder, letting it vibrate your whole throat.
  4. Then speak out loud the words you couldn't say: "I need..." "I want..." "No."
  5. Sing, tone, or make any sound that wants to come out. Let your throat move freely.
  6. Do this for 5 minutes. Notice the opening, the release.

When to use it: When you feel a lump in your throat, when you can't speak your truth, or daily to reclaim your voice.

Somatic Practice 2: Grounding Through Feet (Returning to Safety)

What it does: Brings you out of freeze mode and into present-moment safety through earth connection.

How to do it:

  1. Stand barefoot on the ground (grass, earth, or floor).
  2. Feel your feet. Notice the weight, the temperature, the texture.
  3. Slowly shift your weight from foot to foot.
  4. Then stomp your feet gently 10 times.
  5. Stand still. Feel the earth supporting you.
  6. Say out loud: "The ground is solid. I'm safe. I'm supported."
  7. Take 5 deep breaths, feeling your feet with each exhale.

When to use it: When you feel frozen, when you can't feel your body, or when anxiety about security arises.

Somatic Practice 3: Gentle Rocking (Soothing the Nervous System)

What it does: Soothes the freeze response and teaches the nervous system that movement is safe.

How to do it:

  1. Sit comfortably or lie down.
  2. Gently rock your body side to side, like a gentle sway.
  3. Or rock forward and back, very slowly.
  4. Let the movement be small, gentle, soothing.
  5. Hum softly while rocking if it feels good.
  6. Do this for 5-10 minutes. Notice the calming, the softening.

When to use it: When you feel frozen, when you can't calm down, or before sleep.

Somatic Practice 4: Belly Breathing (Releasing Gut Tension)

What it does: Releases anxiety stored in the gut and activates the parasympathetic nervous system.

How to do it:

  1. Lie down. Place one hand on your belly, one on your chest.
  2. Breathe deeply into your belly (not your chest). Feel your belly rise.
  3. Exhale slowly, feeling your belly fall.
  4. Do this for 10 breaths.
  5. Then place both hands on your belly and gently massage in clockwise circles.
  6. Say: "It's safe to digest. It's safe to let go."

When to use it: When you have digestive issues, when you feel anxious, or daily for gut health.

Somatic Practice 5: Jaw and Neck Release (Letting Go of Control)

What it does: Releases the holding pattern of stubbornness and fear of change.

How to do it:

  1. Sit comfortably. Gently massage your jaw joints in small circles.
  2. Open and close your mouth slowly, noticing any clicking or tension.
  3. Then slowly turn your head side to side, as far as comfortable.
  4. Roll your shoulders back 10 times, then forward 10 times.
  5. Say out loud: "I can let go. Change is safe. I'm flexible."
  6. Notice the softening, the release of control.

When to use it: When you feel stubborn, when you're resisting change, or when neck/jaw is tight.

Daily Somatic Routine for Taurus

Morning (10 minutes):

  • Grounding through feet (3 minutes)
  • Throat release (3 minutes)
  • Belly breathing (4 minutes)

When Frozen (as needed):

  • Gentle rocking (until you feel movement returning)
  • Grounding through feet (to return to safety)

Evening (10 minutes):

  • Jaw and neck release (5 minutes)
  • Gentle rocking (5 minutes)

Advanced Practice: Somatic Experiencing Session

For deeper healing, work with a Somatic Experiencing practitioner who can help you:

  • Gently mobilize frozen energy
  • Track sensations as they awaken
  • Titrate the release (small doses)
  • Teach your nervous system that movement is safe

This is especially important if you have chronic freeze, dissociation, or numbness that won't resolve with self-practice.

What to Expect: The Healing Process

Week 1-2: You might feel more sensation returning. This can be uncomfortableβ€”you're waking up.

Week 3-4: You'll notice less throat tension, easier digestion, more groundedness.

Month 2-3: Chronic tension starts to release. You can feel your body again.

Month 6+: Your nervous system learns a new baseline. You can feel safe in your body.

The Gift of Somatic Healing: The Embodied Taurus

When Taurus releases trauma from the body, you don't lose your groundednessβ€”you reclaim it. The freeze energy that was stuck becomes the ability to be still without being frozen. The throat tension becomes clear voice. The gut issues become the ability to digest life.

You become grounded in your body, able to feel pleasure and pain, connected to the earth and to yourself. You can finally trust that the ground beneath you is solid. That you're safe. That you can come back to life.

Your body has been holding this for you. Now it's time to let it go.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
