Wunjo Rune Divination: Reading Joy, Harmony & Wellbeing in Spreads

When Wunjo (ᚹ) appears in a rune reading, joy is speaking. The eighth rune of the Elder Futhark — the final rune of Freya's Ætt, the completion of the first family — carries a message about the quality of your fundamental wellbeing: whether you are in harmony with yourself and your life, whether joy is present or absent, whether the conditions for genuine happiness are in place or need attention. Wunjo in a reading asks: are you truly well? And if not, what would it take to be?
Wunjo Upright: Core Divination Meanings
Joy and happiness: Wunjo upright is one of the most unambiguously positive runes in the Elder Futhark. It signals genuine joy — not superficial pleasure, but the deep, settled happiness of a life in harmony with itself. If you have been struggling, Wunjo upright is a welcome sign that joy is present or approaching.
Harmony and alignment: Wunjo upright indicates that the elements of your situation are in harmony — that things are working together rather than against each other, that you are in alignment with your true nature and your true path. The banner is flying; the winds are fair.
Wish fulfillment: In some runic traditions, Wunjo is called the "wish rune" — the rune whose appearance signals that a wish or desire is being fulfilled or is about to be. Upright, it can indicate that something you have been hoping for is coming into being.
Community and belonging: Wunjo's joy is never solitary. Upright, it can indicate the presence or approach of genuine community — people who share your values, your vision, your sense of what makes life worth living. Soul family is near.
Success and achievement: Wunjo upright can indicate the successful completion of a project or goal — the joy of achievement, of having done what you set out to do. The banner flies over a completed work.
Positive transformation: As the final rune of Freya's Ætt, Wunjo upright can indicate the completion of a cycle of growth — the joy that comes at the end of a difficult journey when you realize how far you have come and how much you have become.
Wunjo Reversed (Merkstave): Shadow Meanings
Sorrow and depression: Wunjo reversed most commonly indicates a state of genuine unhappiness — depression, chronic sorrow, or the sense that joy is simply not available. This is not a permanent condition; it is a signal that something needs to change, that the conditions for joy need to be examined and addressed.
Discord and disharmony: The banner torn by contrary winds — Wunjo reversed indicates that the elements of your situation are in conflict rather than harmony. Something is out of alignment, and the discord is preventing the natural flow of joy and wellbeing.
Alienation and isolation: The shadow of Wunjo's community joy is loneliness and alienation — the sense of not belonging, of being outside the warmth of the longhouse. Wunjo reversed can indicate a period of isolation or the painful experience of being in the wrong community, surrounded by people who do not truly see or value you.
Delusion and false joy: Wunjo reversed can warn of false happiness — the forced positivity that masks genuine pain, the performance of joy that is not felt, the denial of real problems in favor of a superficial good mood. Something is being suppressed rather than genuinely resolved.
Blocked wish: If Wunjo upright signals wish fulfillment, reversed it can indicate that a wish or desire is blocked — that what you want is not coming, or that what you think you want is not actually what would bring you joy.
Frenzy and excess: The shadow of joy is frenzy — the desperate pursuit of pleasure that is actually a flight from pain. Wunjo reversed can indicate that the search for happiness has become compulsive or excessive, that you are chasing joy rather than allowing it to arise naturally.
Wunjo in Different Spread Positions
Single Rune Draw
Wunjo in a single draw is a direct message about your current state of joy and harmony. Upright: genuine wellbeing is present — appreciate it, anchor it, share it. Reversed: something is blocking your natural joy — examine what needs to change for harmony to be restored.
Three-Rune Spread (Past – Present – Future)
Past position: Wunjo in the past indicates a period of genuine joy, harmony, or community that has shaped your current situation. Upright: a happy time whose positive effects are still present. Reversed: a period of sorrow or discord in the past that is still influencing your current state of wellbeing.
Present position: Wunjo in the present is a direct statement about your current wellbeing. Upright: you are genuinely well — in harmony with yourself and your life. Reversed: you are currently experiencing discord or sorrow — something needs attention before joy can return.
Future position: Wunjo upright in the future is one of the most welcome indicators in any reading — genuine joy, harmony, and wellbeing are approaching. The difficult period is ending; the banner will fly again. Reversed: a period of challenge or sorrow may be approaching — build your foundations of joy now so they can sustain you.
Five-Rune Cross Spread
Center: Wunjo at the center defines the entire reading as being about joy, harmony, and the quality of your fundamental wellbeing. Every other rune should be interpreted through the lens of what is contributing to or detracting from genuine happiness.
Above (conscious): Joy and harmony are your conscious goals. You are actively working toward genuine happiness and the conditions that support it.
Below (unconscious): Deep, foundational themes around joy and belonging — possibly ancestral patterns of happiness or sorrow, deep beliefs about whether you deserve joy, or unconscious sources of genuine wellbeing that have not yet been recognized.
Left (releasing): A period of sorrow, discord, or blocked joy is ending. The conditions for genuine happiness are being restored.
Right (approaching): Joy, harmony, or a significant source of genuine wellbeing is approaching. Open yourself to receive it.
Wunjo in Combination with Other Runes
Wunjo + Gebo (ᚷ): The joy of perfect partnership. Sacred exchange (Gebo) combined with genuine joy (Wunjo) creates the energy of a relationship that brings authentic happiness to both parties — one of the most positive combinations for love and creative partnership.
Wunjo + Sowilo (ᛊ): Radiant, confident joy. The sun (Sowilo) amplifies Wunjo's happiness into something that shines outward and attracts others. This combination often appears when someone is at their most genuinely themselves — joyful, confident, and magnetic.
Wunjo + Fehu (ᚠ): The joy of abundance. Flowing wealth (Fehu) combined with genuine happiness (Wunjo) suggests that material abundance is contributing to genuine wellbeing — not just financial success, but the kind of prosperity that actually makes life better.
Wunjo + Nauthiz (ᚾ): Joy through difficulty. The combination of Wunjo's happiness and Nauthiz's constraint suggests that genuine joy is being found within limitation — the deep satisfaction of doing what is necessary with grace, or the joy that is discovered precisely because of the difficulty that preceded it.
Wunjo + Hagalaz (ᚺ): Joy disrupted. Hagalaz's disruptive energy combined with Wunjo's harmony suggests that a period of happiness is being interrupted by an unexpected challenge. The disruption is temporary; the joy will return, often deepened by the experience.
Wunjo + Berkano (ᛒ): The joy of new beginnings. Wunjo's happiness combined with Berkano's nurturing, generative energy suggests the joy of birth — of a new project, relationship, or phase of life beginning with genuine happiness and the promise of growth.
