Yarrow Stalk Method: Complete Guide to the Traditional I Ching Divination Ritual

Yarrow Stalk Method: Complete Guide to the Traditional I Ching Divination Ritual

What Is the Yarrow Stalk Method?

The yarrow stalk method (蓍草法, shī cǎo fǎ) is the oldest and most sacred technique for consulting the I Ching. Dating back over 3,000 years to the Western Zhou dynasty, this method uses 50 dried stalks of the yarrow plant (Achillea millefolium) to generate hexagrams through a slow, meditative counting process. Unlike the faster coin method, the yarrow stalk ritual can take 30 to 45 minutes to complete a single hexagram — and that deliberate pace is precisely the point.

The method is considered the gold standard of I Ching divination because its mathematical probability distribution differs from the coin method, producing changing lines at different frequencies. More importantly, the extended ritual creates a sustained state of focused intention that many practitioners believe deepens the quality of the oracle's response.

The History and Sacred Origins of Yarrow Stalks

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) was not chosen arbitrarily. In ancient China, yarrow was considered a plant of exceptional longevity and spiritual potency. Classical texts describe yarrow growing on the graves of sages and near sacred mountains, absorbing the qi of heaven and earth over centuries. The Shuo Gua (Explanation of the Trigrams), one of the Ten Wings appended to the I Ching, states that the sage kings used yarrow to communicate with the divine order of the cosmos.

Archaeological evidence from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE) shows early divination using oracle bones, but by the Zhou dynasty, yarrow stalks had become the preferred medium for consulting the Zhou Yi — the text that would become the I Ching. The philosopher Confucius reportedly said he wished to live fifty more years so he could devote them entirely to studying the I Ching, and it was the yarrow stalk method he practiced.

In the Confucian tradition, the ritual of casting yarrow stalks was considered a form of li (禮) — proper ritual conduct — that aligned the practitioner with the moral order of the universe. The slowness was not inefficiency; it was reverence.

What You Need: Materials and Preparation

The 50 Stalks

Traditionally, you need exactly 50 dried yarrow stalks, each approximately 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) long. One stalk is set aside at the beginning and never used — representing the Tao, the undivided ground of being that underlies all change. The remaining 49 stalks are used in the counting process.

You can purchase dried yarrow stalks from herbalists, metaphysical shops, or online suppliers. Some practitioners grow and harvest their own yarrow, drying the stalks in late summer when the plant is at peak potency. If authentic yarrow stalks are unavailable, some practitioners use wooden dowels or bamboo sticks of uniform length, though purists prefer the original plant material.

The Sacred Space

Prepare a clean, flat surface — traditionally a low table or mat on the floor. Many practitioners use a dedicated cloth (silk is traditional) spread on the surface to keep the stalks clean and contained. You will need enough space to divide the stalks into two piles and count them out in groups of four.

Light incense if you wish. Settle your mind. The I Ching responds to the quality of your attention, and the yarrow stalk method demands full presence.

Formulating Your Question

Before touching the stalks, spend time with your question. The I Ching works best with open, sincere questions about situations where you genuinely seek guidance — not yes/no questions, not tests of the oracle's accuracy, not questions about other people's private affairs. A good question might be: What do I need to understand about this situation? or What is the most important thing to consider as I make this decision?

Hold the question clearly in your mind throughout the entire ritual.

The Yarrow Stalk Procedure: Step by Step

The procedure is performed three times to generate each line of the hexagram. Since a hexagram has six lines, you will complete the full procedure eighteen times to build one complete hexagram. Each round of three procedures generates one line, from the bottom of the hexagram upward.

Step 1: Set Aside One Stalk

Take all 50 stalks in your hands. Remove one stalk and place it to the side. This stalk represents the Tao — the unchanging ground beneath all change. It will not be used again until the next hexagram. You now hold 49 stalks.

Step 2: Divide into Two Piles

Without counting, randomly divide the 49 stalks into two piles. Place one pile to your left (representing Earth, yin) and one pile to your right (representing Heaven, yang). This spontaneous division is the first moment of randomness — the oracle's first breath.

Step 3: Take One Stalk from the Right Pile

Take one stalk from the right pile and place it between the ring finger and little finger of your left hand. This stalk represents humanity — the third force between Heaven and Earth, the position of the human being in the cosmic triad.

Step 4: Count the Left Pile in Groups of Four

Take the left pile and count out the stalks in groups of four, setting each group of four aside. When you reach the end, you will have a remainder of 1, 2, 3, or 4 stalks. Place this remainder between the middle and ring fingers of your left hand.

Step 5: Count the Right Pile in Groups of Four

Now take the right pile and count it out in groups of four in the same way. The remainder (1, 2, 3, or 4 stalks) goes between the index and middle fingers of your left hand.

Step 6: Count What You Hold

Count the stalks held between your fingers: the one stalk from Step 3, plus the remainder from the left pile, plus the remainder from the right pile. This total will always be either 9 or 5.

If the total is 9: set these aside. You have 40 stalks remaining. If the total is 5: set these aside. You have 44 stalks remaining. This completes the first operation.

Step 7: Second Operation

Gather the remaining stalks (40 or 44). Again divide them randomly into two piles. Again take one stalk from the right pile and hold it between your ring and little fingers. Count each pile in groups of four, holding the remainders between your fingers. This time, the total held will always be either 8 or 4.

Step 8: Third Operation

Gather the remaining stalks and repeat the process exactly as in Step 7. Again the total held will be 8 or 4.

Step 9: Count the Remaining Stalks

After three operations, count the stalks that remain (not the ones set aside). The number will be 24, 28, 32, or 36. Divide this number by 4 to get a value of 6, 7, 8, or 9.

6 = Old Yin (changing yin line) — transforms to yang. 7 = Young Yang (stable yang line). 8 = Young Yin (stable yin line). 9 = Old Yang (changing yang line) — transforms to yin.

Record this line at the bottom of your hexagram. Then gather all 49 working stalks and repeat the entire three-operation procedure to generate the next line.

Understanding the Probability Distribution

One of the most significant differences between the yarrow stalk method and the coin method is the probability of generating changing lines. In the coin method, old yin and old yang each have a 1-in-4 (25%) chance of appearing. In the yarrow stalk method, the probabilities are asymmetrical:

Old Yang (9, changing yang): 1/16 probability (6.25%). Young Yang (7, stable yang): 5/16 probability (31.25%). Young Yin (8, stable yin): 7/16 probability (43.75%). Old Yin (6, changing yin): 3/16 probability (18.75%).

This asymmetry means that stable yin lines are the most common outcome, and changing yang lines are the rarest. Many scholars believe this distribution reflects a cosmological preference for receptivity and stillness — the Taoist understanding that yin is the ground state of the universe, with yang arising as dynamic movement within it.

The Meditative Dimension: Why Slowness Matters

The yarrow stalk method takes time — typically 30 to 45 minutes for a single hexagram. This is not a bug; it is the core feature. The extended ritual serves several functions that faster methods cannot replicate.

First, the repetitive counting creates a light meditative state. The mind quiets. The analytical, problem-solving mode of consciousness recedes, and a more receptive, intuitive awareness comes forward. This is the state in which the I Ching's symbolic language speaks most clearly.

Second, the physical engagement with the stalks — the feel of them in your hands, the sound of them being counted, the visual pattern of the piles — creates a somatic anchor for your question. The body becomes involved in the inquiry, not just the mind.

Third, the time investment signals to your deeper self that this question matters. You are not seeking a quick answer; you are entering into genuine dialogue with the oracle. This sincerity — what the I Ching calls fu (孚), inner truth — is considered essential for meaningful divination.

Recording and Interpreting Your Hexagram

As you generate each line (bottom to top), record it carefully. After six lines, you have your primary hexagram. If any lines are changing (old yin or old yang), change them to their opposites to generate a second hexagram — the relating hexagram, which shows where the situation is moving.

Read the primary hexagram's Judgment and Image first. Then read the specific changing line texts if you have changing lines. Finally, read the relating hexagram's Judgment to understand the direction of change. The interplay between primary and relating hexagram is where the I Ching's deepest wisdom often emerges.

Caring for Your Yarrow Stalks

Traditional practitioners treat their yarrow stalks as sacred objects. Store them wrapped in silk or natural cloth, in a dedicated box or pouch. Keep them in a clean, elevated place — not on the floor. Some practitioners burn a stick of incense near the stalks periodically to maintain their energetic clarity.

Before each consultation, hold the stalks in both hands for a moment, breathing slowly, centering yourself. This brief act of acknowledgment prepares both you and the oracle for the work ahead.

Over time, your stalks will develop a patina from handling — a slight darkening and smoothing that many practitioners find beautiful. This is the physical record of your practice, the accumulated presence of all the questions you have brought to the oracle.

The Yarrow Stalk Method in Modern Practice

In an age of digital I Ching apps and instant hexagram generators, the yarrow stalk method stands as a deliberate counter-practice. It asks something of you: your time, your attention, your willingness to slow down. In return, it offers something that faster methods rarely provide — a genuine encounter with the oracle, conducted at the pace of genuine inquiry.

Many contemporary practitioners use the coin method for everyday questions and reserve the yarrow stalk method for the questions that truly matter: major life decisions, deep personal inquiries, situations where they need not just an answer but a genuine shift in perspective.

The I Ching has been consulted for over three thousand years. The yarrow stalk method is how it was consulted for most of that time. When you sit down with 50 stalks and a sincere question, you are joining a lineage of inquiry that stretches back to the sage kings of ancient China — and forward into whatever wisdom you are seeking today.
