BY NICOLE LAU
Yule occurs at the winter solstice, the exact moment when the sun enters Capricorn (around December 21-22). This astrological event - the Capricorn ingress - is one of the year's most powerful moments, marking the sun's symbolic death and rebirth, the turning point from darkness to light, and the beginning of a new solar cycle.
The Winter Solstice: Astrological Turning Point
The winter solstice is an astronomical and astrological event. The sun reaches its lowest point in the sky (Northern Hemisphere). It's the shortest day and longest night. At this exact moment, the sun enters Capricorn at 0 degrees. This is the Capricorn ingress - a cardinal point marking a new season. After this moment, days begin to lengthen. The sun is symbolically reborn and begins its return to strength.

Earth element grounds the rebirth in material reality. Capricorn represents the climb from darkness to light. The Goat climbs the mountain, symbolizing the sun's return journey. This sign transforms death into rebirth through discipline and perseverance.
Saturn's Role in Rebirth
Saturn, Capricorn's ruler, is essential to Yule's astrology. Saturn represents time, including the darkest time of year. It rules death, endings, and necessary losses. But Saturn also rules rebirth through structure and discipline. The solstice is Saturn's domain - the moment of maximum darkness and the turning toward light. Working with Saturn energy at Yule supports deep transformation and lasting rebirth.
The Death-Rebirth Dynamic
Astrologically, the solstice embodies death-rebirth. The sun reaches its weakest point - symbolic death. At this exact moment, it's reborn and begins growing stronger. This isn't gradual but instantaneous - a moment of transformation. The solstice teaches that death and rebirth are not separate but simultaneous. The darkest moment contains the seed of light's return.
Cardinal Energy and Initiation
The solstice is a cardinal point - one of four yearly turning points. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) initiate seasons. The winter solstice initiates winter and the sun's return journey. Cardinal energy is active, initiating, and transformative. At Yule, we harness this cardinal energy for new beginnings. We initiate the rebirth we want to experience.
The Solar Cycle
